Just because...

Mr. C's Imperials arrived Monday... yea!!!

After unloading and securing the cars, I went to the local tax collector's office for title and tags. This was not my plan, I had intended to spend $30 each + FedEx and have an agency take care of this. In order to verify the VIN numbers for title work I reached out to a contact in the Orange Co Sheriff's office... was referred to proper contact in the auto-theft division... called and went straight to a recorded message "The Orange Co Sheriff's office no longer does VIN verification... Go to the Tax Office and get a temporary (paper) plate so you can drive the car to them for Vin verification."

So I think "crap... I want to plate these cars fast...". I arrive at the Tax office closest to the cars, only a couple miles, at about 1:00pm and wait in line for the receptionist. Time stamp 1:46 I am texted my place in line for title work will be an estimated 125-145 min. wait. Just fooling around with the system I reply with "S" for a status update..."there are 110 people in front of you estimated wait is 227-247 min. @ 2:02 time stamp...
@2:32 101 people 323-343 min.

@5:36 I am called
So I go to the window, explain what I am here for. "You need to go to the sheriff's office for the VIN verification." NO I DON'T, and repeated the info from the recording. Looking at the paperwork, she found a problem "We can't do this, you need a bill of sale form". "I already came to this office to get the paperwork you're people said was required, I have conducted this transaction and shipped the cars from across the country". Washington isn't across the country" titles are in her hand. "Washington state IS". "I can't do this without a bill of sale because you didn't fill out the title correctly". "Where do you want me to sign?" "That would be illegal". "May I speak to a supervisor?"

The supervisor, without looking at the paperwork informs me I haven't filled out the titles correctly and this can't be done. "I came to your office and got the paperwork you recommended" (I also spoke to the non-state run agency and added a power of attorney form at their recommendation). The supervisor looks over the paperwork and tells me I did not fill out the "odometer disclosure" section. "I want them titled mileage exempt, they are 1974 models"... eventually these two decide that I actually do have rights to the cars and they actually can issue the paper plates @ 6:30pm.

Tuesday I scheduled an appointment on the website for Wednesday. I was at the shop until 9pm Monday, tucking in the twins. Tuesday @ 4:00ish I arrive at the tag office with the 2 door. "We can't do a VIN verification, because I'm the only receptionist here". I explain the situation "I can only drive one at a time, may I speak to a supervisor?". The same supervisor from the day before comes out and verifies the VIN... she even tries to hide the dirty looks.

Wednesday, I arrive for when appointment should have been. Unfortunately, looking at my phone for the first time since making the appointment, I see that on the third response message they sent says my appointment is for next week... I explain to the receptionist my error and get registered for this day.

@ 4:14 called to the window

This clerk takes the titles and paperwork as I am sorting it out... its very confusing when both cars are 1974 and are the same on paper except for VIN and number of doors... and one has a VIN that ends in 1974... we go outside and she verifies the VIN on the 4 door. We go inside and she works on the transfer. I offer her the power of attorney forms and she says she doesn't need them... I really like her, she has a great attitude and acts like she isn't have an axe to grind with humanity. I tell her the supervisor and other clerk thought the power of attorney papers were important... she looks startled and takes them to the supervisor to she if she has missed something. The supervisor glares at me from her glass office and is making a "brush away" gesture with the back of her hand... I only am guessing the conversation was something like "just get that ******* out of here". My clerk comes back and thanks me for pointing out the importance of those papers and she is very sweet throughout the completion of the transaction. At 5:30ish I leave the Tax Collector's office as people are trying to still sneak in the "out" door... the security guard is excited he won't have to see me again this week... I may have to put him on my Christmas card list if I go back there.

I wish I was in Highlands County Florida, with a population the size of my zip code... I believe this stuff would be a much more pleasant experience. BTW on Wednesday, the "nice" clerk told me I could have had a Florida notary do my VIN verification... I had "lost" that information in my anxiousness to get the twins legal and in safely in my garage... So now I am busy trying to make up the 13-14 hours I lost this week...

Your longest post to date and the only one I've read start to finish......a very frustrating experience you had down there. One of the few good things about Jersey, oddly enough is their DMV

The Maryland MVA is horrible too.

My experience was a little more complicated....

Both of my cars are 78's, both are 4 doors, both are ID'ed as Chrysler Sedan's even though they are hardtop's. Maryland doesn't classify anything as a hardtop. The only difference is the VIN's.

I had a problem trying to renew the registration on line. I have historic tags as official plates but I also have vintage 1978 Maryland plates actually on the car.

So....to register online on this sh*tty Maryland MVA website. I have to turn my firewall off for a few minutes or I can't use this website. So you can imagine I'm really freaking out!!! To top it off, I have to have the title number and the historic plate number that is not on my electronic insurance cards. OK, so I go into my safe and get the Title for the NYB and search around for the historic plate number I have written in one of my password books. (I need the info for permission from the police to park on the street in Milwaukee overnight when I visit so I don't get ticketed.) Why don't I just go outside and get the tag number off the plate laying on the back seat floor? Well, the car is parked a block away since I only have 2 parking spots in front of my townhouse and my girlfriend won't park a block away. So I get all of this info and key in all the credit card info and hit submit. Guess what....wrong FN car!!! It's the Newport that needs to be renewed! The Newport is at one of my friend's garage in the next county! He lets me leave the car in his shop while I was replacing the the brake booster, then we had the blizzard, then I had a few very high priority tests at work, etc. The MVA website locks me out and won't let access anything else. I'm done! I'll try again the next day and got it done. I still haven't received the new registration and sticker.

Jeez....this post is almost as long as Can't Shut Up! LOL!

Believe me ....I'm just as frustrated with the damn MVA system period!

About 4 years ago I walked into a rural Secretary of State with a handwritten bill of sale for a car I bought without a title and walked out a half hour later with a paper title.

Great story! Yes, Jersey has come a long way, but was just like that in the 1980's. I had clerks put up a "next window" sign just as I got to the front of a hour long line.

I find it well worth the $20 to have a notary come to me do the VIN verification. Make sure you use a BOS from the DMV website online, one trip and done.
You also are not required to use your county's tax collector,I always use the next county down, as the wait times are far less. 3 hours? My head would explode.
Congrads on the receipt of your new cars, pics are in order, and maybe cigars?

Wow! Sorry to hear of the DMV thrash. I'm glad the cars arrived okay.

New York State used to be a *****. It's gotten better since they have all the forms and regulations on their website. I've found that if I have every form filled out and if the car came from out of state, they will want a pencil rubbing of the VIN. It doesn't say that anywhere... I just give it to them before they ask.

It used to be that guys would go to the small town DMV offices because they treat you better. I like going to the one near the "hood". I have all my ducks in a row... The forms I need are filled out. I put on a nice shirt. Let's say I am not their usual customer getting the hoopty registered and leave it at that. I give them a pile of paperwork and a smile... They like that.

I gotta couple ER stories like that too....
Please, dont start. :mob:
Had to bring my wife in twice in the last two weeks. :BangHead:
Welfare families, orange pickers, snowbirds... :elmer:
In by 9:00 AM, out by 10:00 PM. And you ask why I'm on the internet with my tablet so much....

Hokey smokes sorry for your trouble. When we moved here and had to go to DMV for the VIN verification, tag, title and DL, we were in and out in under 30 minutes. Though we had learned to read each and ever possible piece of paper work the dmv could have asked for from our experiences in CT.

In CT our DL's were an entire day for each of us. Plates were a nightmare. Everytime we went we were turned away for another piece of paper work on the truck. The Magnum we had a book with us as we were only going once. I think the DMV there actually gets a rise out of sending you packing repeatedly.

Sitting in dmv now....looks like 5 min wait to finally get 91 on road after a 8-9 year build.....goin for a ride today.....gona find me some ricers to terrorize
