The wakeup call didn't hit Milwaukeeans until the mid 1970's. The thing to do up to that point was tear down the Victorian age structure and build something new. I'm glad they woke up and starting to save all the historical buildings. City Hall which was also famously in Laverne and Shirley and Happy Days was built in the 1890's and had a major exterior renovation around the year 2000. Very cool history and at one time was one of the tallest buildings in the U.S. in the 1890's. I'll see if I can dig something up on City Hall.

I wish things were different with my family when I retired from the Army in 1996. I really wanted to move back home to Milwaukee but my drunken, drug addicted, bum unemployed brothers and sister took advantage of my parents until their dying days. They made by parents lives miserable every damn day and I would of ended up in prison for killing one or several of them for what they were doing to my parents. I wasn't sure Maryland was far enough away.... I almost retired in Germany. I had a Yugoslavian girlfriend that I lived with in Germany and she wanted me to retire in Germany. She said I wouldn't even need to work and that she would take care of me. The Pentagon had different plans for me. I was deployed during the late 1970's, all of the 1980's except 10 months in 1983, and the early 1990's until March 1992. I left Germany and went to Saudi Arabia, Kuwait, and Iraq during 1990-1991 and returned back to Germany after the war. I thought I was going to stay in Germany but the Pentagon cut orders on me and I ended up at Aberdeen Proving Ground, Maryland. By the way, 3 of those brothers have died since then. One hung himself, another overdosed on heroin, and one drank himself to death. I have one brother and one sister left. I'm the oldest of 7 and I'm going to outlive all of them.....hopefully.

Gosh, you have been through it all in life. Really sounds like a living hell for your parents too. Very sorry to hear of all those misfortunes. But hopefully thinking of the good things back in the day can overcome some of the hurt and pain. We never know what others experiences have been, and that is why I give considerable deference to people in my interactions with them.

I truly hope you do outlive them all and that your days left here on the planet are good ones. My sincere best wishes. And thanks again for the history lessons.

What incredible homes, just stunning architecture. And they really look sturdy for those cold winters too. Hope they last for centuries more.

Was just up at the Public market this morning and spent the afternoon at the Harley Museum with my wife and son. Its to bad Milwaukee is slowly turning into Chicago with all the violence. I still like to visit though.

I looked up on Zillow.com the value of the George Miller house today, and it shows $963K with some 8900 square ft of space. Not as high as I would have guessed. I was unable to find the value of Kern House though.

Market value has dropped a lot for these beautiful mansions in the last few years. Look up some of the mansions on Lake Shore Drive.

Very nice also seeing the interiors in these lavish mansions. What a time that must have been! Incredible detail.

Tours are available at a lot of these places too.

Open Doors Milwaukee is an organization that has walking tours of these neighborhoods and they arrange guided tours in a few buildings every month
