Photos of Vintage Auto Dealerships, Repair Shops, and Gas Stations

Can't leave out our Canadian brothers & sisters.

Former British American Oil Co. gas station, built 1949, Highway 3A at Duck Creek Rd, Wynndel, British Columbia, Canada (14 miles from BC/Idaho border, 300 miles SW of Calgary AB, 600 miles east of Vancouver BC).

British American bought by Gulf Oil in 1969. Template architecture, streamline moderne, stucco over brick it seems, was used across Canada by BA.

Looks to have been abandoned for a long time. Still there as of 2019. Still vacant then too, dunno a few yeard later. Good size/features for a "hobby" garage, looks to be kinda off the beaten path though.

As of 2019 - Shape of building (three sided, one overhead door still present) suggests its still there tho substantially changed in 80 years.

1938, Vancouver, British Columbia, on Connaught Drive. Quite distinctive architecture. Exact address unknown.

circa: 1910, Vancouver, British Columbia, 590 Hornby St. Typical 19th century architecture;

Identified as the first gas station in Canada (the whole country). Way long gone... it was smack dab in the middle of what is now downtown Vancouver.

circa late 1920's - Muskokwa, Ontario. Double meter pumps no less.

This could be where the above Byron garage is now:

There are 2 other candidates within 1/4 mile of each other. This area is along the Thames river, near StoryBook Gardens. Guy Lombardo cruised the Thames in his father's motor boat near here, and maybe some of us know what he went on to do soon after (hydroplane racing and band leader). This is about a mile or two from me.

I believe this is 1971 (based on the car in the showroom) and located in Iowa.

Not very exciting architecturally, but below is another view. From the 2014 FABO post where I found it:

"shot of Van Zee Dodge in Oskaloosa, Iowa. Jim Van Zee has raced for decades and although in his 70's he and his Challenger are a force to be reckoned with. He is so much fun to talk to and has a ton of old "back in the day" photo albums."

Distinctive designs.

European locations, streamline moderne most of them, couple mid-century moderns. I conclude overseas given the car models .. these aren't American vehicles.

last two art-deco in America somewhere likely west coast as Associated Oil was a California-based company eventually rolled into one of the trust-busted Standards.

All are vintage 1930's to 1950's builds.

sum gun ... still there. 80th at Aurora, Seattle WA. Canopies gone, but wonderful, 80 year old art-deco "bones" still plainly evident.

Looks about 3,500 sq.ft. , too small for my "retiree hobby house (need 5,000+ sq. ft.) , and clearly zoned commercial, but plenty spacious for a hobby business.

vintage image is 1946, building built in 1937.

Located at P.le Francesco Accursio, 22, 20155, Milan Italy. Built in the 1920's, after closing and falling into disrepair, it was repurposed as an upscale eatery and events center in 2018.

Cool joint, appreciated for what is was architecturally. Tons of pics - before and after - at thelink below. Those folks knew what they were saving and spent the Euros to do it.

Bravo Milano! Dannazione bel lavoro!

While I'm not posting some pictures this time, I happened upon this and thought it was interesting... It's a trimmed down history of the early Ford plant in North Carolina. I think they missed the mark with details, but it's still good. There's a video to watch too.

History

More European (I see Italian language in a couple - AGIP is an Italian petroleum company, ARAL is a German company) vintage stations.. no location/verification of existence. yet.

All architecturally distinctive designs 70+ years old for most of them I'd estimate.

@amazinblue82 -- wonderful building and thanks for reporting the story!

@antonellomopar -- have you been to Garage Italia Milano?

1949, Goodwill Buick/Pontiac, 210 S. Broad Street, Brevard, NC.

Rather uninspired industrial design, a bit creative with the brickwork, but I think building is still there, repurposed intto four different businesses. No doubt in my mind :)

Buick dealer building would be my retiree home garage .. the Pontiac/GMC building would be a real estate investment for me.
