Lotta (over 20 other pics) neat old joints at the link. They have the dates, a few general locations but not specific enough to if they still exist.

Circa: 1958. The "Flying A" brand, owned by Tidewater Oil, which was folded into Getty Oil.

circa: 1962, an experimental, purpose built "space-age" design for the building/light fixtures (Sunray Oil, merged into Sunoco later) . Not many built that anybody can document today, but the new "DX" signage stayed until Sunoco retired the brand in the '80's.

circa 1968 -- Standard was criticized by their "porcelain eyesores" (the beautiful art-deco stations I like), so they went to this style/variants.

A decade old story with a happy ending. Good deal for everybody.

A former Phillips 66 gas station, 212 S. Grand Blvd, St. Louis, Mo. Built 1966, mid-century modern design.

After its gas station days were over, it became a Del Taco restaurant. Threatened with demolition in late 2000's, a grass roots effort helped save/repurpose it for its architectural significance (now a historic structure).

Along come Starbucks and Chipotle (two companies that didnt even exist in 1966).

No history found on this art deco gem before it was Tom's Autobody, 7229 Melrose, Los Angeles CA. Built as a gas station, but cannot confirm with vintage photos.

Lala's been in it since 1996. They dropped some dough on it to make it an eatery and still keeping its external distinctiveness (even appeared to rehab the pyramid tip of the tower). It was still there in 2022.

source: Phillips 66 Gull Wing "New Look" service stations on Route 66

The "batwing" or "gullwing" Phillips 66's, the "New Look" phase from late 1950's to mid-1960's the company went through.

In the 60's, they were complaints that these (and those of other companies) "swoopy" designs were "eyesores". Response was designs that looked more like residential homes.

Most "single" wing, but many were "double" wing designs. Some had signage poking through the apex of wing, some didnt.

Approx. 3,000 built across the country, so fairly ubiquitous design, NOT easily renovated without tearing down the whole thing, so many may still be around.

Examples below:

A group of enthusiasts for everything today ... including folks trying to find this design still standing (dunno the exact addresses so dunno if they are still standing) in their localities.

Several examples for reference when you will likely see/know of one of the "New Look" designs still around in your area.

Holmes County, Mississippi.
