Power Steering Pump Leak

Hi, my 66 Polara has developed a power steering fluid leak over the last few days, coming from the bottom of the pump where pump and reservoir meet. I understand that a large o-ring is used to seal pump to reservoir and I've ordered what I hope is the correct seal kit. The pump is the 1.2 TRW version...image included below.

Just wondering how to separate the pump from the reservoir....has anyone got experience with replacing this seal?

You'll have to remove the pump assembly from the car. There are a few bolts on the back side of the reservoir that will separate the two halves.

Hows the belt tension on that thing? While you have it out, it may be worthwhile to upgrade to the sturdier bracket style.

Thanks, I can only see one bolt the back, at the bottom, but guess I'll see more once the pump is removed. I'm thinking for just replacing the o-ring that there won't be any need to remove the pulley, will there?

Yes, I thought that about the bracket too. I'm able to get decent belt tension but the pump isn't held very securely and there's a lot of movement when the engine is running. Also it doesn't line up too well. So, I've ordered the same bracket you linked to, but from National Moparts.

Sounds like you're off to the right start! Pulley does not need to come off. Make sure to buy some fresh power steering fluid and refill up til the bottom of the filler neck.

I'd find a pulley puller and do your shaft seals as well. They came with the seal kit.

If the power steering works I wouldn't worry about the tension.
I run my belts loose so not to put unneeded load on the pulleys.

I typically hold the pump/alternator with a couple fingers while I tighten the pivot bolt.

This is on my 63 Buick ,but all the pumps are simliar. As 440Sled has said do the whole pump and you will not have any problems for along time.

Hi guys and thanks for the additional replies. I actually do have a pulley puller (had to buy one when a replacement PS pump for my 69 F100 came without a pulley)...but I left it a friends house....and I needed to get my Polara up and running again asap. So, I just did the pump to reservoir seal this time around (and gave the pump a coat of paint). Normally I would have taken the extra time to do those shaft seals.. But at least I am leak free again....for now!
