I have a 65 sport fury 440 with a 727 trans that is >1966. I want to install a universal shifter and looking for recommendations. I have the factory console and would like to modify it to use the universal shifter. Has anyone done this? Please advise. Thanks!

Rather than one of those yunky universal hot rod shifters, look for a SlapStick shifter out of a middle 1970s Cordoba or Charger. This is a factory ratchet shifter. If in "1", push forward and to the side, stops at "2". Cycle repeat to get to "D". Will only get to "N" after you release the side pressure on the shifter. You might discover it mounts up to a part of the existing floor pan, too!

ONLY thing is that the factory console shifters for the '66 or so B-bodies are shorter than what the C-body cars used. According to what others have posted in here, with pictures of the C-body shifters being about 1-2" longer. I'm suspecting the last year the factory SlapStik shifter was used is the 1979 Cordoba 300s and Dodge Charger Magnum GTs?

There are a couple of Facebook groups on the Chrysler B-body cars of the middle-to-late 1970s ("Malaise Era") Cordobas. Some parts cars, too.

Enjoy!

I agree with CBODY67, however if you want to go to an aftermarket shifter, my go-to has always been the B&M Star Shifter. I like the way it works like a normal shifter but you can put it in ratchet, or "slap" mode easily. Easy to install just make sure the shift cable stays clear of the exhaust.

Like I said I agree with CBODY67, I have a Star shifter in my Fury now and I like it but I found a console so I'm going to modify a stock B-Body slap stick to work in my console. I just want it to look more stock. Plus I have another car that is going to need that star shifter.

I had a couple 73 Challengers back in the day. I think the Slap Stick is the best auto shifter around. I don't mind the stock shifter in my 64 Polara. It is a good one as well.

Thanks Cbody67! I’ll definitely check it out.

Hello Monc440, I had test tried a star shifter (without the proper brackets). All he has is the shifter and cable. Being a front cable entry, the cable came down at an angle that looks like it will be a pain to shifter at a good angle. Another buddy suggests get one with the rear cable entry. I see the B&M Sport shifter is rear cable entry. The rear looks more friendly. Any input?
Thanks

I have never tried the sport shifter. Also the star shifter in my fury is not in the stock console.

In my teeny bopper years, the Slapstick was THE Shifter for ANY studly rod, including Ford Disgustangs and Chevy Shrimps. MUCH sought, seldom obtained, so the B & M took second place. I had one for a Turbo 400 behind a Buick 350 in an International Harvester TravelAll. I built a nice, STURDY sheetmetal console for that B & M, a big improvement over the wooden crate used when I got that vehicle.
