Scenicruisin'..?

My understanding is the rear axle on the tandem setup is a dummy, there are a couple brackets that attach to the springs. They carry no weight.

Long story short, these may be a "cool" idea but more trouble than they are worth. I didnt yet find any reputable-looking body builder/converter advertising they do these things.

So just for curiousity's sake, i spent the wee hours trying to figure out how these things are built. it would make sense the front is the drive axle. is the rear a straight axle (like a trailer?) or a "regular" axle, with suspension AND brakes, but just no drive shaft attached?

I did find this one (pirate4x4.com) below BUT the vehicle is more an "RV" than a custom van like photo above. I don't want this kind of RV - thats what the PD-4501 is for me.

Anyway on this one below, two full axles, both axles suspended/braked, gas tank between them (yikes), first axle is the driven one, and some obviously fabbed parts it seems?.

Plus, this is TWO vehicles mated i think hence the wider space between the rear axles?

He is an owner operator truck driver... 18 very expensive tires to keep legal.

yes, and like many others of you my "tutor" in many a thread :). i see now - it was a "tire" joke (not the cost, just the number needed). makes sense.

There are a few really ingenious "custom-made" RV's sprinkled through this thread. Most are not my style, but I respect the creativity that went into them.

That's cheap. You mount tires yourself??
Yes, finally found a awesome tire guy and because he is close I get door to door service, leaves the bill in mailbox. Nice and easy, and there are worse ways to spend a day than flipping tires and drinking beer.

No there isn't...
Let the shop do it while you're in the bar next door.
Seriously, you mount your own tires???
Then how do you drive from shop after they are done?
Yes I mount my own tires. I do my own car tires also although that is increasing more difficult with newer low profiles. Basically except for PA. state inspection waste of time no mechanics touch any of my cars, I do have a guy down the road that runs the family garage and has a 11.80s all steel GTO that I will use in a pinch. I am not fond of other people touching my stuff.

You make me feel so insignificant... :(

I will have to speak to you about how to buy tires... whenever I get around to that project again.
Tires are a racket fueled by thieves, scare tactics, desperation, and Assholes. They are simple if they are black round and hold air they are good.

Won't argue... but they are too old for the current date format if that tells you anything... they are due.
