Seperating tranny from engine

Did you take the dust shield off the bottom?
If you haven't unbolted the converter from the flex plate, it will still come apart. Not the right way to do it, but it will come apart. It's catching on the dust shield.
Do not attempt to put it back together like this.

The flex plate and convertor are still bolted together in this shot. You may have damaged the front seal and perhaps the pump by now...... FSM.......! Factory Service Manual....... GET ONE.

I have pulled a few engines with the converter still attached when they are set up and can't roll over to get the bolts out. Not my preferred method but it will work. Just be sure to change the front pump seal as a precaution.

The first time I ever pulled an engine (318/904 in an E-Body) I unbolted the transmission from the engine and started pulling, it stuck. I looked and saw the dust shield so I removed it and the engine popped out with the converter still attached. Again i never done it before and had no clue, just dove it. I still pull engines leaving the transmissions in the car but not I know to unbolt the flex plate.

Sorry I wasn't more clear.
It's pretty much impossible to be hung up with an inch gap between the housings and not be putting damaging pressure on something...
I like the bravery to try something new, but read the book (FSM) first and/or ask questions, Google, Youtube or whatever to try to pick up on some of the finer details of the job first. This job doesn't get much easier than on the cherry picker... but you need to know what to do next or this sort of thing happens.

I posted yesterday asking what the best manual was to get in another post, and someone posted the link. SO how the heck are you supposed to get to those bolts if you don't separate the tranny a little ways?

Remove the dust shield and rotate the motor until you've unbolted all of the bolts.
Right, understand. Thanks for the heads up, and yes I should've had the shop manual first. I was planning on having some work done to the tranny anyway.
Im actually more of an old car/truck/tractor guy than a motorcycle guy, They sit around more than they get ridden. my farms on 1-1/2 mile gravel road. Not good for convertible or jeep travel either.

In this diagram ( post #20) u show the outside bolt holrs in flexplate being closer to converter. Mine came apart with crank bolts being closer to converter. In other words do i need flip flexplate over? Thnx
That's a generic diagram of who knows what car. Don't read much into it.
Put it back together the same way it came apart and you'll be fine.
