Shipping Parts ?

Just to add a comment from my recent experience, they will only ship from and to stores that have a forklift. Not all stores have one. Also, I didn't have to pre-pay for the shipment.

Who arranged the shipment? You or the other party?

Wow you guys are as bad as shippers at these companies. My Prius only uses 4 gallons to go 300 mi I don't know why you can't haul it for less than 450 + 200 fuel surcharge. Gee I wonder.

Another reason your shipping rates are so high is diesel exhaust emissions. Before 2002 trucks getting 6-8 was pretty common place once the emission laws put into effect by a oil man under environmental ruse, please, fuel milage started dropping and price started going up. Now you will be lucky to get 5 mpg that's .80 cents per mile fuel cost at 4.00 per gallon. No company is escaping this, the cow piss trucks barely helped put fuel milage back into the fives, and did not lower the $/mile just spread it out with different fluids.

I don't know what you are talking about. Someone asked a question and some of us shared out experience about shipping. No one asked for advice on the best vehicle to use for hauling or what's the best use of their time.

Telling you why fuel tripled in between 2000-2008 fuel milage went down 33% tires have doubled in price. Six years later you are now seeing the effect.

Your asking to have stuff shipped for pennies. You want to wrap it up in some old newspaper with a masking tape label and then can't understand why it didn't make it there undamaged. Proper packaging and labeling is key.

I have always spent more to ship things than other people assume it cost...... I wrap all my parts in heavy bubble wrap, I pack and pad my boxes, and make sure my parts arrive in the same condition they left in. Ask anybody that has bought from me if there parts arrived damaged due to poor packaging. Is it cheap no. I only use USPS for flat-rate. I use fedex for larger items. I use a LTL freight truck for Hoods and large body parts. Almost always the dimensions of a shipment make the shipping more than the weight. My customers buy a service from me. I don't ask them to drive to fastenal, greyhound ect to pick there items up. They get shipped door to door.

I have no idea where you are coming from with these statements i.e. the comment about asking to have stuff shipped for pennies, how I package anything, or stuff getting damaged. I always pack and label things very well, actually me and the wife usually do the packing together because I hate packing but I am involved knowing the parts to ensure we do what is necessary to do our best to minimize damage. Those that have bought things from me were always happy with our packaging and the shipments have always arrived where they were supposed to w/o damage.

We are discussing the most cost effective shipping methods and companies to use for different weight and cube items and sharing experience and knowledge. Normal for a car forum where people buy and sell from individuals separated by many miles and sometimes national boundaries.

I don't think anyone is trying to put any trucking or shipping companies out of business and I have a pretty decent grasp on fuel costs and understand why goods and shipping costs are more than they were before the increase in fuel costs.

Better than I have been able to say

Who do you use for LTL? I had no luck finding one that didn't go through a broker, Fastenal only worked out because Alan was willing to deliver.

You are correct it costs more to ship than many people seem to think. Unfortunately that's about it.

Further, congratulations. This is the single most pretentious, presumptuous, judgmental, and self absorbed comment I have ever seen on any forum and to top it off it's all slopped on with a steaming bucket of insinuation and innuendo. I'll add high horsed and holier than thou because they certainly fit too.

Do your customers have any say in the shipping method or do make that decision for them or do you just cover all shipping charges and give them the item for the cost of the bubble wrap because you are so much better than everyone else?

Honestly you obviously are satisfying people and I don't doubt you are more than likely very reasonable in prices and do a good job shipping and people are satisfied or you wouldn't have parted out two cars already and for all I know many more but seriously. Judge much?

I stand by this

I use FEDEX, USPS, and Fastenal

USPS cheaper for light things

FEDEX cheaper for heavier things

Fastenal cheaper for really heavy or really big things as long as it fits on a pallet. A pallet is usually around ~ $125 or less for body parts or engines

USPS doesn't care how big a box is as long as a man can carry it in and it doesn't weigh very much .. like almost nothing at all or it fits in their pre-sized boxes (under 75 lbs) ... that's the gist but if you can carry something in that's the size of a fender in a box and it weights almost nothing counting the massive box it may vary. I mean a reasonable sized box.

FEDEX cares how big AND heavy it is but is more forgiving on heavy things by a very long shot. USPS is cost prohibitive for heavy. I've shipped a 2 BBL for $14 plus and a 1 BBL for $13 plus via USPS .. both are heavy for how small they are but they did not fit in their pre-sized boxes and if they don't fit it get's expensive real quick. FEDEX was more expensive for those 2 items so I used USPS. I've shipped steel wheels via FEDEX for $25 a piece. USPS isn't going to touch that.

Fastenal is better for big things and they don't care much how heavy it is. I've known a few guys to ship engines for ~$100 bucks across country. I got a quote for 3 steel wheels .. $100 bucks. I got a quote for 4 wheels and tires .. $100 bucks. As I said earlier tailgate and 70 Magnum manifolds $115, ship 2 727's $125 bucks . It all fits on a pallet ... about a $100 bucks.

Do you have a forklift at your house? More importantly do all your customers have a forklift and are they or do they all want to have to be present whenever the driver shows up?

I think people would rather choose for themselves on shipping and how much $ they want to spend and you are making out like your decision of only shipping door to door is in their best interest, when really it's probably your preference is BS. I don't pretend to know everything so if you care to offer up some companies and some examples of what you've shipped via door to door trucking companies I'd love to learn so I too can ship my stuff at the best price and in the customers best interest.

I'm not as big a parts seller as you. I'm just selling some stuff I have because I need the room, need to buy some part myself, and I don't want to throw or give it away. I'm not going out finding good candidates to strip out so I'm sure you have more experience than me and have sold many more parts than I, but I know what I know from trying to find the least expensive method for whoever wants what I have, and I'm honest and I make sure I pack stuff well.

I have bubble wrap too

I shipped 2 Formal bumpers (heavy as hell), bumper shockers, radiator and trim pieces in a wooden crate that was 8'x4'x4' and weighed 850 lbs from El Paso, TX to Aberdeen Proving Ground, Maryland for a little over $400. The crate was delivered in 2 days.

Pilot Freight Services....ask for ground economy rates.

You are entitled to your opinion!!........ I was just stating what has worked well for me. Why is it when everybody states what has worked best for them all the brow-beaters come out and say that's way to expensive!!?? I have shipped everything from glass to fenders, hoods, trim ect. I haven't needed or wanted to ship drive-train parts. Ie engines, trans, rear axles. I have a problem with company's that charge you and say I will send it out when there is room!! It may go out in 2 weeks. My customers pay for shipping to receive there parts asap. No I don't ship next day unless they want it. I ship ground. Yes Iam referring to Fastenal, and greyhound.

Tailhair I have a problem with you getting all pissed off when somebody states there opinion and it doesn't match what you think!! GROW UP!! Iam here to help. I have always been here to help. There's been 5 cars I have parted out recently.
