So where are all the cool kids buying auto carpet?

Thank you Big_John! Very helpful! I am actually ready to buy a black carpet and I was going to use Stock Interiors .Com too. I am very confused though (my first time) on what type of carpet: 80/20, plush etc as I don't know what that means ...I just want a durable original look. Also if I should get the Mass Backing option for $82. Any thoughts out there? I have the 67 Polara "L" trim level 4 door sedan. I really appreciate the help everybody!

80/20 loop is what your car came with. Ask for samples off the stockinteriors site if you want to see what the materials actually are. I'm not familiar with the mass backing, so I have no answer or opinion.

I'd ask @69bfan for a price too! I really like that he orders with extra material to trim.

Yes Big John, I saw that too! I'll ask for maybe an additional 5 inches to each side and front parts. I am going to ask for the sample for sure because the carpet is supposed to wrap/hook around the edge and the front door sills secure the carpet over that. I'll wrap the sample around that lip and test that the sill will not stick up when screwing it back in place. I will post my result and maybe some pics to help others with that type of backing style. Thanks big John! You're the man!

Is 80/20 correct for a 66 model year? I might be buying carpet soon as well.

Yes it is Luco. After John's great help, I was up late searching for more info and found that it was pretty much all the same until the 70's. Imperial might have been the only exception.
I think I've been through this before, but a few years ago so the memory has been purged, til now.

I'd ask in the resto section, but it's for a B-body.

Sorry.

Even worse it's cut pile, (1979). I've not seen any version that impressed me...always looks like fuzz compared to the factory shag-like stuff. I will soon have a bunch of decent red interior parts for a '79 Magnum, if anyone is interested. Going from all-red to white with navy blue carpet, dash, etc.

Any club buys or coupons out there? Recommendations for quality?

Man I wish you were closer I could use that Red interior for my 79 300...PM me with pictures of door panels/opera window surround maybe we can work something out - Thanks

Hey Big_John,
That carpet looks pretty cool...how did you use the solder gun to burn holes for seat bolts? Did you lay out the carpet, fit it as you wanted, then glue in places before burning holes?

Also did you come up from underneath?

That is sorta my plan...get the carpet in my '69 300 fitted the way i would want, glue it a bit then holes. I was gonna try the burn with soldering gun on the old carpet to get the hang of it...I guess I will just apply the hot gun to the carpet in a circular fashion?

Thanks in advance for your input!
Dave

On my Barracuda I did this without knowing it was the way it is done.
From the bottom, on my iron only the tip fit through the bolt hole. Once done from the bottom I went through the top with the barrel of the iron opening up the carpet. I had a junk iron so I wasn't worried about it.

The other thing I did with the carpet was put it in the car a week or two before trimming it. It was literally the first thing I put in the interior, by the time I was ready to trim it the carpet was nice and flat, pushed into all the contours etc.

Yes!!! Let the carpet sit there before you trim it. Hot sun is even better.

Actually I've got a bunch of '79 300 stuff, including a really nice extra carpet set. We'll be in touch.

Ok all...I got my samples from Stock Interiors. The pics below are the comparison between standard carpet backing and "Mass" backing. The Mass backing sounded good to me because the girl over the phone said is was better road sound deadening (which I really don't mind), but more importantly, insulates the floor from heat. I though that was nice, because i don't have AC and the floor does get hot, which does radiate through the cabin. I was concerned though, because I knew that the thicker backing may be difficult to wrap around the sill lip and wind lace. In the pictures, you will see my test. The black looped standard carpet was just like the original screwed in nicely, buy the Mass backing was a lot more difficult and I'm not sure how a full carpet install will work around the sill and B piller trim. I was able to screw the sill plate down, but it was tight. I was disappointed though, because the pile of the Mass backing sample, was not the loop 80/20 style like the other sample, so i don't know how the 80/20 with mass backing will be. I also have a closeup of the two to show that the 501 backing was semi-porous (little holes) and the Mass backing is very solid. Any of you guys have an opinion about moisture retention with Mass backing made that way? Big John, any thoughts since you were in the business? The girl on the phone said no but, I'd like to hear what you guys think. I hope this and the pics help you guys that are inquiring for a carpet as well!

I'll bet that the "mass backing" is only in the same spots as the factory jute backing. I may be wrong on that... but it would surprise me if the backing covered the entire carpet.

IMHO, If I wanted to do some heat or sound insulation, I wouldn't do the "mass" backing. Instead I would use some material on the floor instead.

My car ('70 300 vert) was done with Rattle Trap sound deadener. My main concern was sound deadening and the way to do that is to dampen the vibration of the sheet metal floor. This worked great for me. Obviously, there is some heat insulation too, but it did make the car much quieter.

This is pretty much the same stuff as they use on roofs, so I feel that it has sealed the floor from moisture getting under the insulation.

If I was more concerned with heat, I would use this stuff. EZ Cool Automotive Insulation heat barrier and noise reduction for cars, trucks, classic cars, street rods and much more

This is a much lighter material and doesn't absorb or hold water. It will help with sound, but its forte is heat insulation. I used this under the headliner in my Barracuda. Glue it in place with contact cement.

I was never in "the business" of doing this stuff, so my opinion is just based on what I've read and experienced.

Guys: I just ordered a mass-back carpet set for my '66 convertible from @69bfan. He will have it for me at Carlisle. I'll let you know how the mass-backing works out. I have installed this kind of carpet in a Camaro a few years ago, and it worked out fine.

Once again, thank you for the tip John! That was my concern and they directly address that! I apologize, I thought in a earlier post you sold carpets...my apologies!!! I did wright that at like 3AM or something after working on the car! Lol! Again thank you for sharing this great info! I'll go with 80/20 501-black!

Also John, nice work on that floor. Professionally done for sure! I would have to think you did not use fute with that application, correct?

I'm thinking to order the 80/20 501 Black without fute with 4" extra cut on all sides, then ordering the EZ Cool Automotive as a combo. How does that sound? I think it is exactly what I am aiming for, the carpet around the weld lip will fit more like oem and less heat! So would you suggest loosing the fute? Your guidance is greatly appreciated more than you know!

I'd leave the jute in place. It helps the carpet keep its shape. That's what I did.

Thank you Rip! It would be interesting to know bud! My goal is to finish my 67 Polara 318 car by the time the Carlisle Mopar nationals come around. I plan on driving it to Carlisle so my brother can take the car home to NJ to enjoy with his kids, then rent a car and get back home to VT! Working on my 67 Polara 383 car now at the same time as I prepare his 318. Yikes! Lol! I hope to meet some of you guys there!

Great, Big John! My first time so sorry for the nieve questions, but trust me, I'm learning and I hope to help you and others out too and return the favor! Wow, I feel much more confident now ordering the carpet and the EZ Cool tomorrow morning! Then it's on to wind Lace! Lol...oh, different thread! Lol! Priceless help Big John thank you bud!

Oh sure... You're an "amateur"... :realcrazy:

John, You do better work than many (most?) professionals... :thankyou::thumbsup:

Ok all, so I got my carpet, very nice ... but yes, the rear seat flanks are missing as a few of you guys said. Called them & sent these pictures of the new laying on top of the old original. She said she was going to get in touch with the supplier (ACC) about it. I was ready to order some extra to cover it, but I guess I'll wait to see what she is trying to do. FYI: When I ordered I asked for 12 additional inches to the rear carpet, but she said they are cut all the same, but she put in a request to have the carpet not cut on the ends, which I preferred, but it didn't make up for these missing flanks.

Ok all, here is the update. First, Stock Interiors is the place to go! The customer service has been incredible! I worked with Tabitha this whole time...They sent the second carpet and it was the same cut for the rear section accept the rear section was cut for the seat latches, and again, short on the flanks and the cut for the seat hooks was too shallow. I called to tell her to just send me an uncut rear and that I would pay for the extra cuts of carpet to cover the rear sides. She asked me to sent pics of the car floor and the car itself (67 Polara 4d Sedan), which I did and she sent them to ACC and called them to see what was up. She said they have Trim Parts old molds and templates, so ACC is working with her to get it right for all cars. Tabitha had me send back the bad rear, but also had me send back the original carpet, so ACC can do it right. Tabitha was very polite in asking me if I could do that which was awesome. I told her I would love to contribute to them correcting the issue.

So they have my original carpet to use...lets see how it goes friends...I will update when the carpet comes back!
