Sometimes I just wanna cry...

If you have the facilities to pull the trans yourself, I'd shop around for a $200 used trans and drive on.

If you are adventurous too then $200 in parts plus a manual gets you a home rebuilt trans. Use the change from the shop built trans to buy beer.

727s are the "Bunny slope" transmissions to rebuild. I would keep your original trans as it is likely numbers matching, plus the 440 trans had a 4 gear planetary vs. the standard 3.

I would shop around for someone that is familiar with them and they should be able to build it for you for $400-$500 for a bench job (R&R would be more) with some type of warranty, be it a year or something reasonable.
 
I've got a great local transmission guru. I bring him all my parts, and pay for the converter. His bench work cost is 250. That includes a complete tear down, all new clutches, steeles, bands, seal, and bushings. We do the removal, and reinstall.
