"Special" Editions

Was it a "Spring Special" or some other "designation"? I was trying to find an ad or promo document for it but dunno what to look for.

I don't know if Imperial used undignified, commoner terms like "spring special". Here is the full story from "how stuff works"...

And then there was the contretemps over the new burgundy vinyl roof.

"One day I walked into the Fabric Studio," recalls Cummins. "On the wall was a framed hand-block-printed leather panel out of an Italian monastery, the kind of material you might use on the back of a chair. I was intrigued by its subtle colors and muted patterns, and thought it might make a nice vinyl roof covering.

"I discussed the idea with studio manager Dudley Smart who got a vendor to make up a sample. It wasn't good, and I emphasized the need to duplicate exactly the look of the wall hanging. Eventually, the vendor arrived with a successful sample, and it went on the car" in 1971, offered with a new Imperial-only exterior color, Spar-kling Burgundy Metallic.

It proved to be one of the shortest-lived options ever offered on an Imperial. For some unknown reason, the burgundy vinyl began to fade rather quickly, revealing an ersatz paisley pattern. (Some speculated that the burgundy color was overprinted onto leftover paisley vinyl roof material used on the special "Mod Top" iterations of the company's smaller cars in 1969-70, but this was not the case.)

After factory reps examined cars at dealerships, Chrysler withdrew the burgundy roof option on November 27, 1970. For customers who complained, the factory offered a replacement vinyl top in either white or black.

The proposed 1962 (done in 1959) progressed a bit further (actually maybe not .. are those "poles" underneath this car is sitting on, approx A-Pillar and C-pillar positions?) but I don't think this thing is driveable.

I recall reading that the '63/64 Chyslers were originally designed as Imperials. This photo sure shows a 63/64 front clip.
Probably a wise decision not to downsize the Imp and wait for the Engel design.

Agree and also I think the higher volume (and profit) Chrysler was in more need of sales help, and the proposed Imperial was the only "finished" idea available. Thus Imperial carries along an extra year with just a refresh.

The High Impact Colors. I stumbled across this looking for something else.

Chrysler Plymouth and Dodge High Impact Colors

I am assuming this chart is accurate (I wouldn't know either way other than I have seen A's, B's and E's in all these colors) as to availability and name

But, I don't recall (OR dont know them when I see them) seeing here, or anywhere, C bodies in these colors. Easy, all that means is I havent seen any .. that does not mean there were NOT any. :)

Examples anyone can point to?

Then this is a different car and I dunno if this is or is not EV2 .. I just picked it cuz it was advertised as "Big Red" when it was for sale a few years back.

I don't think i've seen a C in either of the greens though.

We seem to be running outta steam on the C's .. still "Bigfoots" out there that nobody has bagged. See post #201. I'm surprised none of us can turn these cars up yet. :)

Stumbled on this today: Never heard of one before today. Never seen on in the wild - ever. A regional deal all the way. 1968 Dodge 'Bengal" Charger.

If you don't know what a BENGAL Charger is, you're not alone. Early in
1968, a Cincinnati Dodge dealer commissioned 50 uniquely styled Dodge
Chargers to commemorate the formation of the Cincinnati Bengals' American Football League franchise. The new Charger's body was both modern in appearance and exotic. You could even say it appeared feline in nature with its low-slung, big-shouldered stance. Making a limited production BENGAL edition was "a natural".

The BENGAL Chargers were painted in a unique color that came to be known as"Tiger Orange". They were optioned with black vinyl tops, black "Bengal Stripes" across the back, and chrome fender badges that declared them to be"BENGAL Chargers". All 50 were sold
(note .. another site says NO HEMI's in that group of 50) before the team ever played its first game! These unique cars then slipped into the closet of history and were all but forgotten. Only two of these Special Order muscle cars survive today.

The Oleg Cassini AMC Matador (courtesy Automobile Magazine)

1974-1975 AMC Matador by Oleg Cassini
AMC commissioned fashion designer Oleg Cassini to design a snazzier, more stylish interior for its 1974-1975 Matador coupe. This wasn’t the first unusual fashion version from AMC, following a Levi’s denim-look AMC Gremlin (see below) and a Gucci Sportabout version of the AMC Hornet. With the Cassini edition, AMC hoped to push the Matador coupe toward 25-35 year-old car buyers. The resultant car included black nylon upholstery with copper accents, various pieces of copper trim, extra-plush carpeting, and various Cassini crests throughout the car. This treatment added only $299 to the price of an AMC Matador coupe, which listed for $3,096 in 1974 and $3,446 in 1975. –JH

The Matador in this era was a funny looking car .. but i really liked 'em. To me it was much cooler with sporty aftermarket wheels/tires (255/60's in back) and airshocks.

Never heard or seen the Oleg Cassini cars until today. Had I seen this one below, i mighta bought it on the spot (if seller had the bumpers .. cant drive it like this tho guys do :)).

Yeah, i liked the sport model Matadors with the longitudinal stripe down the side. The fancy ones with vinyl tops looked "off".
