Speedo Cable Gear?

Hey guys, recently the speedo in my son's 65 stopped working.
So yesterday, we took the cable apart to look and see what was going on before ordering any parts and what we found was interesting.
We pulled the cable loose from the back of the speedo and the pulled the other end out of the transmission to see if it would spin by hand.
Well, the cable itself is not actually broken. The plastic gear on the end at the transmission had all the teeth like smashed or rounded off. It was concave shaped.
I should have taken a picture of it before putting it back together.
Anyway, the short story is I actually only need the gear but will probably replace the whole cable. I tried to remove the gear but couldn't figure out how to remove it.
My son had to be at work so we put it back together for now.
Where is a good place to buy the gear?
I see the cables at different places. I haven't found the gear yet.

Brewer Performance has the early gears. Mega Parts USA does as well.

As @Toolmanmike said Brewers Performance has them. Not cheap at $65 though. They are different from later gears, '66 and up.

Also, let me know what the tooth count is. I may have a good used one I can sell.

To remove, there's a clip that retains the gear to the cable.

With the trans speedo gear holder removed, look inside of the tailshaft for the gear that turns it. It might be either plastic or metal. Look for wear there, too.

IF the speedo needle has been running "smooth" before this issue, you can probably wipe the existing grease from it, re-lube with genuine speedometer cable lube, and re-use it with the new gear. Might put some trans lube on the new gear when installing it, for good measure.

In the mean time, driving without a speedometer might be a bit scary at first, but just remember to drive with the flow of traffic, generally. But with time, you learn to figure that the 18-wheelers are usually limited to their own highway speed (in many parts of TX, that's 65mph, for example) limit. You can also learn to notice which drivers seem to be more hurried, by their actions, so don't pace them. Just relax and enjoy the drive in a Chrysler product!

I can clearly see the 2 slots on the side where a clip would be.
It wasn't on there.
I tried to just pull it off and tried to pry with a screwdriver but it wouldn't budge.

Bet someone has glued it on.

The gear has broken teeth anyway, so try to break it in half to get it off. Count the teeth first.

Those say 66-75.

He's got a 65 Imperial.

Yeah, it's a 65.
The gear was like that clearish yellow color like plastic with no color added.
If it would stop raining I'll pull it out again.
It ain't hard to do. I just have to get the thing jacked up and on some stands again.

As far as driving without a speedometer, I would not trust pacing other traffic,at least not in Ohio, Google maps has a GPS speedometer, usually pretty accurate

Well, driving with no speedometer is not the real problem.
He doesn't have a gas gauge either.
We need to fix both.

I had a 65 Imperial also. Speedometer never did work. Missing the gear in the transmission. Just flowed with the traffic, or if I had to, count the mile sticks and adjust to get one a minute = 60 mph. One at 55 seconds is 65

Alright guys, Check this out.
We pulled the speedo cable and found this.

So naturally I thought "well, we just need a new speedo cable and gear.
So, I called the ever cool and helpful Murray Park and ordered a cable and gear set.
Cable shows up quickly and looks good. Let's slap this thing in there. Easy fix, right?
Nope.
New cable installed and speedo still doesn't work.
After a bit of trouble shooting I realized that the cable won't turn the speedo by hand. Meaning with the cable pulled loose from the transmission it won't turn.
So, I decided to pull the speedo itself.

The cylinder and spring all seem to move freely.
The problem seems to be where the cable goes in.
It's seized up or broken somehow inside.
Is this part fixable, replaceable or should I just get a whole new speedo?

Also, when I took it apart the little spring off the odometer fell out before I could see where it goes.
Can anyone tell me how it goes or point me to a resource?

I got a new speedo from the amazing Murray Park today.
I went over it carefully and I don't see that spring on it anywhere.
Maybe it came from somewhere else.
I installed it and it is working fine. I switched the odo's because I want the mileage to be accurate for this car.
We have a working speedo and odo once again.

Yay Murray! I just checked 3 instrument clusters and see no sign of that little spring.
