Getting ready to rebuild my front end, and one of those things will be changing the steering box as mine has a multitude of little problems...

I have two here in the shop and have acess to a bunch of others. All of them OE originals.

Can anyone shed some light on the part numbers for me? I googled them with no success and don't have access to parts books.

Casting numbers might not identify the year and application for each box (what's in it). The casting date might help with the possible model year it was cast after, though.

I think the key thing would be to make sure the mounting lugs are in the same place and size as what your current box has. Plus the input shaft connection to the steering column and the output shaft splines/size.

Just some thoughts,

www.mymopar.com has the online parts manual, free download. It is in the reference section and is the master parts catalogue for 1969. The gear part number should be in section 19-1. It is usually easier to take your existing gear and reference the housing number to see if any of your available units is correct. There often is more than one unit that will work.

I just checked the www.larescorp.com website and they show "65-72" on C-body gearboxes, at least in what they sell for reman boxes. Might be something on the "Firm Feel" or "Steer and Gear" websites that might be more informative? Even "60-61 Desoto" for the same reman box.

I was thinking that most were the same, internally, but I also know there might be some yearly upgrades or other differences, but with the same gear ratio.

I'm not too sure what the numbers are but I want to make sure you know to keep the hose line "nipple" where it connects to the box itself and goes to the power steering pump. I didn't and the new one didn't come with one. (facepalm)
