Stong battery, NO headlights, NO start???

Easiest and quickest fix is to unbolt either the red or black wire (doesn't matter) and bolt it down with the other wire. That bypasses the ammeter completely and cleanly.

A voltmeter under the dash is now a very good addition.

Just connect it right on the ammeter to the other one.

What Big_John says is right on the money. Do you have the cluster out some. If so try tightening the first nut on the studs. My problem was that they were loose. Once I tightened them all was good for the rest of this summer.

My son took care of it this morning. His nickname is "Eagleeyesnimblefingers". Took a while to get gas to the carb but it kept cranking like mad and then fired right up.

I'm assuming we can run the car indefinitely with the amp meter bypassed like this - yes??

Yes you can run it as long as you want, BUT, remember you have no way of knowing if your charging system takes a crap on you this way.

Without the ammeter, you really need to add a voltmeter.
