Ok I'm sure it's been covered some where. But is there a way for me to determine gear ratio on a 742 8.75 sure grip rear axle? I jacked on side up marked both the housing and pinion and turned the tire 2 full turns and got about 2 and just over a 1/4 turns on the pinion. So does that mean it's a 3:23? Any help is appreciated.

You jack up both sides, rotate the wheel 360 degrees, count how many times the yoke rotates 360 degrees. and there you go! Wheel turns once, yoke 3.25 times or so,,,,,3:23

Ok jack both sides up and came up with 3 1/4 turns again. So I'm guessing 3:23. So now I know the car is a 383 4 speed sure grip with 3:23s. Cool! Thanks guys. And I looked all over for the tag and didn't find but only the one that said use sure grip oil.

On a side note I may have found a 4speed that has the same drive shaft hookup. Mine is not a yoke style. It's the other one. (Can't remeber what it's called).

The standard ratio for sure grip equipped axles is the 3:23.
