I see insulation on the interior of the foundation walls. Nice!

Stan: I wish that was true, but that styrofoam "insulation" you see is used as a dam for the concrete, so that the exposed ledge is narrowed and therefore, suitable for the attachment of a 2X6 pressure treated plate. After the concrete sets up, the styrofoam is removed along with the metal forms. The stud wall we build later rests on and attaches to that plate. You'll notice that two different thicknesses of styrofoam is used: the narrower pieces are associated with a 2X6 plate, and the thicker are for a 2X4 plate. Not sure I am making any sense here. . .

You are making TOTAL sense. I eat this stuff up.
Now for the dumb question of the day.
Why did you step the foundation down to the exact width of the floor plates. Why not just butt the outside edge of floor plate up to the exterior edge of the foundation?

I don't know if its the exact width of the floor plate or not. . . I'm sure there is a science to this stuff, but so far, it has been a voyage of discovery for me.

It looks like they put a foundation in to support the weight of the structure and then put a retaining wall on that to hold back the soil.

I need to read up about pouring foundations I guess...

Me too. But I think working with concrete is pretty much a black art that one must learn over many years. All these concrete guys (we've had three different ones on this project, so far) have more than twenty years experience with this stuff. The foundation guy just turned sixty. . .
