The toys that made a difference to you...

Sad. Looks like we all have wonderful memories of actual real toys that stimulated our love of all things mechanical. And what have we got now. Nothing but little girls and boys glued to their phones 24/7...

Yeah, sad in a way (whats so much "fun" about Twitter?) but things change and in some ways get better.

Like we are 'kids of our era", using with whatever toy technology that was available to us, "kids of this and future eras" will be shaped by whatever lights them up too.

a few years back, Popular Mechanics (i used to really like that magazine) did a piece on the must-have "hands on" toys in 2011. the Fuel Cell Car and Experiment Kit, Nanodot Magnetic Constructors, Talking Electron Microscope, etc.

I cant quite see myself, as a kid, interested in such stuff, but then again I'm "old" now. What kids like today reflects today's environment.

I guess 20 years from now, 50+ years after the last C-body rolled out the plant, there will be a few people around (hopefully a lot of us) who still love 'em. Hopefully a few people who werent alive when they were in production might like them too?

Anyway, at least there's still "Hot Wheels" around today to fuel a new generation of gearheads: the 2014 Hot Wheel Dodge Daytona. And, they are still makin' bikes. All is not lost :icon_lol:

One of the great insufferable truths of adulthood is that toys are always cooler when you're too old to acceptably play with them. Take this custom-built Cadillac baby stroller, for example. A scale model of the iconic '60, the stroller features underbody lighting, sweet whitewall tires, unique pin striping and a slick red interior. Of course, that's just what's on the surface. Doting parents may also press a button to make the stroller shoot flames. That's right: shoot flames. We're in love.

uh, DYFS is on the way.

uh, DYFS is on the way.

Uh, thats one way to view it..some parent putting their kid at risk?

i guess i leave all that to individual decisions people wanna make with things they let their kids go near.

the custom caddie stroller dont look that threatening to me...hope the "authorities" are focusing on really bad situations kids need protection from.

I dont have any infants in the house but I'll take a leap and guess maybe the fire spurting out the rear would not help it to sell very well at any Kids R Us stores. Just a wacky guess.

Not a debate point for me man...I'm just assessing situation a little differently based on limited info.

thx

Frustrated by his own inability to own one for Male Enhancement.
No store in their right mind would touch that thing as is.

Anybody get into the gas-powered stuff? I had this one ...tethered Indy car ... back in 1970

A bit late here,
but no mention of slot cars? I used to love my 1/64th tyco set when I was a kid, always racing my brother or friends. I recently purchased some second hand scalextric, then got some new scalextric and some cars, now the spare room isn't spare anymore, its the slotcar room!IMG_1098[1].jpgIMG_1099[1].jpg

There were two wagons at Carlisle that had DeSoto fins on each side the pink one for the girl, black one for the boy, Tri tower lights flashed and all very cool somebody had to have taken a picture.

I did slot cars. Had the HO ones home and raced the 1/24th at the commercial track. One of the longest running commercial tracks was near here and my kids and I spent a lot of Friday nights racing. They closed about 12 years ago.

I had one of these! I think it's still around.

Yes one of my favorite Christmas presents ever was the slot cars. I remember buying replacements parts for my cars that I wore out.

That is really cool, and those are so collectible now. I had a Cox .049 powered airplane that you flew around in circles, by the wire. I just got my son a rc plane for his Bday. I crashed it multiple times. :( Apparently there is more to flying them than I thought. The really crazy thing is it is electric powered. You can adjust the motor speed from the rc controls. No gas & no cut fingers from spinning the prop to start.

I took 2400 pictures in four days. Of course I took pics of the Desoto wagon (but I only took pictures of one).

Two years ago, I finally realized I would never get around to restoring my 1969 Huffy "The Rail" 5 speed plum crazy purple metallic bike that I had as a kid. I took this picture the day I gave it to a friend's 16 year old son who had been wanting a stingray style bike for years. He is completely redoing the bike. Has had parts rechromed and has replaced parts with NOS pieces, but after stripping all the purple paint off, he is repainting it red, because the purple metallic paint was too expensive, he says.
The coolest part is the chain guard which is designed to look like an exhaust. A bright fluorescent orange surface shows through the slots in the chain guard giving it a look reminiscent of a 71 Road Runner's or Charger's exhaust tips. Original tires are long gone, but originally it had red line tires as most late 60's muscle cars had. Maybe that's why all my classic Mopars have red line tires.

As we all know by now, a lotta stuff got lost in a data snafu. unfortunate but it happens.

if you all get a chance, can you please put back some of the things? a bunch of neat HO stuff came in especially...displays, tracks, personal collections/recollections.

i know everybody is scramblin trying to get back to where they were in 100's of threads and we cant get it all back but please give it a shot if you can. we had a real good thread going here.

Remember These ? We only had the one Version with the VW Bug and the Chevy Pick Up in Germany; there were far more interesting examples available in the US as I see. I think I still have the set up in the attic, think I'll have to look for it next couple of days .:laughing4:

I spent about every penny on car models, no difference to today only the scale has changed.
Some of them I have on Display in the living room.

Not sure I remember exactly what I said in my original post, but, for one, the Aurora Thunderjet slot cars I loved as a kid, were replaced with 1/32 scale slot cars long after the Aurora slot cars were gone.

The diecast Hot Wheels, Matchbox, Corgi and Dinky cars I played with as a kid, gave way to collecting 1/18 scale diecast cars, some of which are displayed on scratch built dioramas of a car dealership and a drive in restaurant.

And although I still have many of the 1/25 scale plastic model car kits I built as a kid and even well into my 30's, the model building these days has shifted to my HO scale train layout (under construction). The vehicles in 1/87 scale that I collect for the train layout are both diecasts and plastic, but they are factory built and detailed. My hand wouldn't be steady enough to detail a 2" long replica anyway. HO (1/87 scale) cars are much smaller than Hot Wheels cars.
