The thing I kept thinking to myself while using AutoCad was, HowTF can someone know how to use CadCam properly if they didn't have many semesters of drafting first.

I see "drawings" now that never would have passed muster coming off a drafting table, approved by the Drafting Manager, and signed off by a Sr. Engineer from each department.

Now these clowns go straight from Etch-A-Sketch to 3D modelling.

I've been learning SolidWorks software on the side, and I have Rhinoceros 3D on my laptop...which I absolutely love.

My brother and I have been having this debate. I still say for the time spent in drafting (most of us had 3-4 years just in high school) you can teach someone within the CAD environment the same thing. The problem is that they don’t even spend a year learning CAD so they do not have the time to teach them about line weights or layout or many of the other elements that make for a good drawing, let’s not even get into lettering.

I'll finally have time to dig into it tomorrow. As with every old car project, I'm expecting it to take about four times as long as it should.

On a side note, I was out banging gears in the Goat today. It's so fun getting sideways in second and chirping third!

Software like SolidWorks, Rhino, and I think Pro-E will auto dimension parts, objects and items in real time while you are building them, cut time.

Guys like you should work along side a protractor and pencil guy.
He'll stand over your shoulder in amazement what you guys crank out in a few hours what took him weeks.
And along the way he'll be pointing out every mistake or lack of detail. LMAO.

HaHaHa....yea, except there are no such things as silly or stupid mistakes when you can use analysis tools in the software seven ways to sunday to prevent that. The Software will let you design a class of boomers in 3 dimensional virtual space and in real time, then let you walk through every nook and cranny of said sub, investigate every sub-system, even down to the faucet in the head to check physical interference before any welders touch anything. I think the guys with the protractors and drafting boards would greatly appreciate that.

Gary, any suggestions?
I have Severe A.D.D. so I can not follow instructions. My right brain is 98% of the total so I need something that is intuitive from the get-go.
What's out there that's next to free?
Don't forget I jumped ship at AutoCad R13... ( a pirated copy at that)

The first cad programs came into use right about that time. The computers that supported them were the size of filing cabinets in some cases.

Side note........

I could of taken a foreign language class that year too. Spanish or German. My Grandparents spoke German so I didn't think I needed to take German. I knew enough to be dangerous....little did I know THEN that I would spend 14 years in Germany while I was in the army. If Vietnamese was offered....I probably would of taken that class.

I kept up with AutoCad until Release 13.0 (Windows 3.11 !)
Once 14.0 came out, my financial ability to keep up with its hardware demands lost me.
I last used it in '05 designing my house.
