Here we have a view of the island of Manhattan taken from real estate near the NJ turnpike. Just takes your breath away doesn't it.

A little "science" in my backyard.

I helped my great-nephew (my sister's son's son, fifth grade) with a science project. He asked me about this when he was in the fourth grade so it took a year to help him out. Why a year?

Every "First Day of Spring, Summer, Fall, and Winter" of 2011 (March, June, September, December), I took a picture of the sunrise from exactly the same spot in my house.

No, I don't live on the Ponderosa..that expanse of field out to the far treeline belongs to the family who settled here in the 1850's, had a 2,000 acre orchard, and this plot still happens to remain undeveloped.

Other than seasons changing as clues, I numbered the "reference points" in my yard 1 through 4, and the assignment to my nephew was to research and explain what the pictures show.

All he had to start with were these pictures...no other information. He had to explain the rest. He did..and he got an "A".

Incidentally, it was the same "experiment" my Dad gave me in the sixth grade (about 100 years ago ), and I gave my kids in the 5th and 3rd grades back in 1996.

Interesting project... I have a lot of questions but dont know how to ask them.....

My wise remark of the day would be, "Why do you always get a sunrise unobscured by clouds"?

a sophisticated question, and "wise" in the good sense :icon_cheese:.

but easy answer. it wasnt "exactly" the "first day of" on a couple of occasions. it took a couple of days to get "Spring" and "Fall" pics...hence the sun position is a little "off"

but the "pattern" was still clear, hence the value of the experiment.
