My 66 fury is my daily driver the other day I was stopped at a red light I'm going to turn green and I started to go it was like it revved before it kicked into first gear and it clumped into it and it was noise like metal scraping so I pulled over looked underneath no issues no leaking so I got back on the road and drove it home. But since then while I drive it it kind of clunks or grinds right when I start going from a stop of the paperwork I have with the car says that the transmission was rebuilt at 82,000 miles now as the car is only at 95kI don't think it's the transmission issue it might be the u-joints so just wanted to know if anybody had any info on an issue like this.

U-joints first squeak and have a light vibration at highway speeds, from my experience on our '66 Newport back in 1973. If they clunk and such, they are worn out and will evidence themselves as such in other very bad actions. In other words, once they start to "get bad", you'll know it!

I would look for something which has come loose and might be touching the driveshaft for the other metallic noises.

As to how the transmission is acting, might just need some fluid added to it? Many times, if it seems to be in "N" and then goes into "D" after a stop, fluid level is the first thing to check. Using the method mentioned in the Chrysler factory service manual or the car's owner's manual.

"Transmission rebuilds" are NOT generic by any means. Lots of variables as "just good enough", "OEM-level", or better-level frictions and other internal components can be used (all hidden!). Then comes assembly quality and other "proprietary" things that almost every transmission rebuilder does themselves to "make things a little better", from their experiences.

So check the ATF for color, smells, and proper level when hot.

Please keep us posted on what you find,

On a rebuild it might need a band tightening, something easy to do you can look it up on YouTube how.

Yea I jacked the car up and when I rotate the tires the front ujoint clicks so I'm gonna drop the drive shaft and replace both ujoints tomorrow see if that's the issue

Check the fluid first if that doesn’t help try this.

First gear when shifted into drive only uses the one way clutch to hold. When you shift it into manual 1st it will apply the low/ reverse band. The one way clutch could be going bad. So try shifting into manual 1st gear and see if the issue goes away, if so you know the one way clutch is going. If not it could be something else.

Good luck

Well I went to drive my car today to see how it was gonna run so I can get new ujoints got 2 min down the road and started make loud metal scraping noise so I pulled over to see if I chucked the drive shaft but it was still there so I idled home because if I go over 5-10mph it makes loud scraping noise. So I got home pulled plate to see if it's torque converter bolts maybe loose and rubbing but they were fine so it seems I blew up my transmission from what I can tell.id post a video of the noise it was making but I can't on here. So I guess I need to rebuild my trans...

Also known as the "sprag". Unfortunately, the more I think about it, the more I'm sure. Pan will have metal debris and hopefully it didn't damage the case to the point of needing replacement.

Yea I'm hoping it's still able to be rebuilt that'd be my plan maybe I'll drop in my 360la at the same time I'm not sure yet. Unfortunately I have to go out of town for work the rest of this month so it's basically gonna sit until then. I'll update when I really dig in to what the issue is.

Yeah a sprag is a type of one way clutch or over running clutch. Most guys understand the term one way clutch. In my experience most of the time the sprag doesn't damage the case but it does damage the outer ring of the sprag so a new one will need to be pressed into the case, or better yet pay a little more and get a bolt in rear sprag.

Keep in mind if you switch to a LA360 it is externally balanced so you will need a different TC or a special flex plate.

Feel lucky you are in SoCal, hear in the north our cars sit 5 months out of the year. lol

Yea hopefully it isn't something too catastrophic I mean it sounds really bad when I was driving it so hopefully I can get it fixed. Yea I have the flex plate for the 360, I pulled it out over a motorhome so I held on to it I would've taken the trans aswell but it had the hump on it and wouldn't fit

If you want to educate yourself about 727 and 904 transmissions there is a guy on YouTube named John Cope, Cope racing transmissions (CRT) he has lots of good info.

The stock flex plat on a 360 or 318 are the same, the stock TC for a 360 has a weight on it, the 318 does not. If you use the stock 318 TC you need a special 360 (weighted) flex plate. If you are going to spend the money on a rebuild you should get a new TC anyway so just get the 360 one if you are going that way.

If you have to move the car again shift into low range and that will keep the sprag from doing more damage.
