1971 Daytona 500. Petty & Fred Lorenzen split a lap down car. I believe it to be Jim Van Diver

Jeez Bob. Some of the newer fans see that 3 and they will lose their minds. Almost the same font....

Yep, newer fans need to be educated. Earnhardt was not the only driver to drive the 3 for Richard Childress either. The Charger pictured was owned by Ray Fox

Harry Hyde & Buddy Baker. 1973. Intersting story about these two. Late in a race Harry was a little miffed at Buddy for his agressive driving that day. Buddy had bumped & grinded his way through the field & had wrinkled the car up pretty good. Soooo Harry radioed him during a caution & told him to run up & hit the pace car. Buddy at a bit of a loss asked why & Harry with a bit of tone to his voice said "WELL YOU'VE HIT EVERY OTHER CAR ON THE TRACK YOU MIGHT AS WELL MAKE IT UNAMIOUS" They didn't speak to each other the rest of the race. You see the car belonged to Norm Krauskafph & they where built in Harry's shop behind his simple house trailer. Harry & his crew did darn near everything right there in that shop in his back yard. So he was well known for being proud & particular of these cars. Rumor has it that he would wax the cars just before qualifying to help the air flow over them. Honest. That's the word I get. Don't tear up Harry's race car LoL

Harry Hyde lying on the ground celebrating with his crew at Charlotte in 1973 after their driver Buddy Baker (tall guy standing in back with arm raised) wins the race. Buddy won Nashville that year too

DAYTONA 500 1976. Petty & David Pearson battling hard in the closing laps. Swap the lead. Comming into turn 4 Petty makes a final pass, but doesn't quite have the big Mercury of Pearson cleared. Clipping the left front fender & both cars slam into the wall hard. Sliding down the track through the grass at the Tri-oval. Petty frantically trying to get the car restarted. Just yards from the finish line. Pearson gets his refired & slowly drives back onto the track passing Pettys stalled car & takes the win. Petty ends up 3rd as a distant Benny Parsons comes accross 2nd. One of the greatest finished in NASCAR history. I was watching it live on TV. One pissed off teenager.

Petty during one of his fan appreciation days he holds at his facility each year. Showing the fans he can change a tire too
