What are your favorite formal upgrades?

Bob, your steering wheel keeps popping into my mind... It may be jealousy, but... No wait, it is simply jealousy...

Did you see the condition of my OEM steering wheel? That damn thing took a chunk out of my hand when I let the steering wheel slide back after making a turn. I was searching for a NOS steering wheel or having mine recast for $1k.

Then we started a conversation about the C-Body T&T steering wheels interchanging from Fusies, R-Bodies, F-J-M's, etc. The debate outcome was the spines are different, the shaft diameter is different, it doesn't have the slot cutout for the T&T lever, etc. I looked in my 78 Chrysler Parts book and of course it wasn't any help to determine the answer to any of the questions posted above. The parts book definitely said that the R and F-J-M's wouldn't fit.

So.......Mr. C found a blue wrapped steering wheel on a 77 Daytona Charger on EBay that a tree smashed it in Pa. I took a chance and drove up and paid the guy $50 for the steering wheel and not able to see anything mechanical unless I paid for it first. He wasn't going to let me take it off just to see if it'll work. That's cool...I'll take a chance for $50. Drove home and popped my old steering wheel off and tried the blue wrapped steering wheel. Spline and diameter was the same, slot for the T&T lever was there. Just couldn't slide the steering wheel down far enough to get the nut on the shaft. Seen that the acrylic hub had to be cut down a little over a 1/2" and it would work. Put it on a lathe and peeled it like an apple and it fit like a glove.

The one thing that I discovered is that the center hub on all the steering wheels has the same diameter and spline count and they all have the slot for the T&T lever. I believe Chrysler made them all the same to save on tooling costs. The only difference is the acrylic cast is different when they pour the acrylic over the metal frame to make the steering wheel. Just have to machine the hub on the back of the steering wheel to make it work on a T&T column.

I believe the Formal Salon was the only leather wrapped steering and only made in gray.
