1966 300 power to manual steering

image.jpeg
Manaul steering boxes for C bodies aren't easy to find for a reason.
I have seen them on highway pursuit CHP cars and a handful of strip model 65/66 furys.
The columns may be the same, but the colum shaft after rag joint will differ for manual box.
I believe shaft will be longer, becuase manual box is shorter.
A 68 or later box will work, but bolts upto colum in different way at rag joint
If you don't find this post helpful, then maybe you will when your car is up on jack stands torn apart.
A/B/E boxes will not work on c bodies.
The pics are of 61 c body boxes. Best describes what im talking about.
Please somebody correct me if I'm wrong?
Welcome to the forum Norman

You'll need a little thicker skin if you want to fit in here Norman. Nobody hates you. Just hard to understand the logic. Just because you can, is not a good answer.

last winter I swapped my brand new firm feel power steering box for a manual steering gear. my car my choice. I put a 69 polara 500 manual box in my 66 polara. it was a direct fit. I knew going in that there is repercussions.
a lady ordered the 69 polara they way she wanted it. Manual steering, manual brakes, 3 on the tree, radio delete and super lite. my kind of gal.
I have driven more than my share of manual steering cars and trucks.
my questions is- are you the only one driving the car? you might not mind the 2 handed steering in parking lots and drive thru's but your buddy or girl friend might crash your car if not paying full attention and being prepared for the 2 handed workout at a seconds notice.
- is it your daily driver? manual steering could become a pain in the ***.
on the open road I totally love the manual box. at 100 mph its 1 finger steering.
I have at least 1 other car licenced and can go with power steering if I want.
do I recommend that anyone converts to manual steering, not without thinkin it thru seriously.
would I do it again, hell yes. but I don't let anyone drive my car.
up in my neck of the woods there was lots of manual steering c body cars in the mid to late 60s

My CHP car has manual steering and I love it, I had a 1970 D-100 with manual steering and loved it.

I'm not a big guy and yes low speed maneuvers can be tricky, much can be rectified with driving style.

I never park in parking lots near other vehicles even in my beaters. When I had a 69 Polara with power steering I still parked in the south forty. In large the turning radius is awful on these cars and it doesn't take much to get pined in a parking stall and require a 20-point turn to get out.

If I recall I think the manual steering gear on C-Bodies is the same as B-Series vans.

This is the steering gear for my 69, I don't know if it would be the same as a 66.

OK, so now it's my turn! Before you go wasting your time & money, do this. Remove your PS belt and go for a drive and then tell me how well you can handle your car! I can sure as hell guarantee your *** that you won't be able to deal with it, and you'll immediately and majorly regret the decision after it's done! Then what? You'll come on here pissin & moanin about how you screwed up, and shouldn't have done it, blah, blah, blah! I hope you have a large source and supplier of spinach!
I wish you luck in whatever endeavor you choose!
Wait...you're the guy who went to personal attacks when I "hijacked" the other thread...so I started my own as directed and now you follow me here to do the same?

Do you really think a disconnected power steering box is the same as a purpose-built manual box? REALLY? C'mon, man!

My '66 Fury has manual brakes and steering. Manual brakes are FAR superior to power brakes with a faulty booster unit, and manual steering is also FAR easier than power steering with the pump disabled. My brakes are, IMHO, always more than adequate. The manual steering is, admitedly, "heavy" at low speed.
A call to National Mo-Parts (888) 652-7464, will probably lead to all the parts necessary.
What ever you do, enjoy your ride, after all, it is "Just for Fun"!!
Thank you, man.

Yes. Since I have three '66 300s, I sure would like to know what Norman is thinking here. Hell. . . Maybe I would want to do this too.

I drove my '68 manual steering/brake Chevy up to the town in which your avatar picture was filmed...From western AZ. Didn't have a problem....(and it ain't Punxsutawney).

Man, I must be the toughest guy in the world. Seriously, I could imagine being wimpy enough to need power steering...but I couldn't imagine BRAGGING about it! I feel like I'm taking crazy pills...all you manly Mopar men crying about somebody who wants manual steering. Baffling. Are you guys pulling my leg here? Please, tell me you're kidding! My faith in humanity is at an all time low already...Are you the guys who leave your shopping carts out in the parking lot because you're to lazy to take them to the rack?...look here: I don't have a @#$%^&* cell phone either. How DO I survive?

There isn't a day I open up to this forum where I don't leave shaking my head thinking WhyTF do I still come here.
And then I do it again...

Totally with you Norman. My favorite cars are all manual- steering, brakes, & transmission. Even with big 440's over the front wheels, manual steering is really no big deal. The key to parking is just to ensure the car is moving when you turn the wheel. I far prefer manual steering to the overboosted setups on 60's & 70's cars that have zero feel. Remember however that this is a C-body board & for most here the more gizmos & power boosted stuff you have is highly valued so you can see how folks might cringe from things manually operated. Nowadays even operating a switch or button is too much work, we need voice commands.
