1966 Fury III - Unfinished Project

Not even running, just cranking over. Proper Holley rebuild kit too, the needles move freely, the rubber inspected (by use of eyeballs) and looks to be ok.

Only thing, as you say, is the floats not closing the valves at all no matter their adjust point. Both are overfilling and I have a wonderful miniature model of Niagara Falls from all the boosters when cranking.

Could the floats be bad? They're the black rubber ones.

That's just not good. Black plastic/foam thingy kind?
Give me brass or give me death, fire I mean.

Ordered a pair of black rubber ones again. Would have preferred brass but they were more expensive.
We'll see when they come in. No telling what happened to this carb before I got it.

I mean, it's been dropped and the choke is missing, for starters...

Yup, calibrated eyeball is correct, somehow I missed the measurement and that's short on the wheel end.
I'll slice it out and add a section in.

Phil

Edit: Yup, went look at the template and I used the wrong datum point because I was trying to hurry up before the rain.

Well that's OK.
Because if you don't hurry before the rain, this car could become a career job.
Me thinks you're cruising right along.

This afternoon was mostly cooler than yesterday so I took the time to remove the panel and start again.

Hammered the arch lip and lower return to a better profile, and curved the lower lip in more as it should be.

Ignoring the big triangular hole I need to fill in, that looks much better.

Looks good in three quarter also so I'll buy that.

Here's a question. Would a Fury 3 have had fender skirts as part of being a 3, or was it still an option at this trim level?

My 66 Fury 111 440 didn't have skirts when I got it in 78. I didn't notice or look for evidence of long-gone skirts. At that age I didn't know jack about cars.

Managed to warp the panel. It'll be ok, but it will need bodywork to finish.

It's got a spring to it right now that I'll be able to fix by welding up the arch lip.

Unfortunately the lower trim below the grille is in worse condition than I had hoped for.

I removed the corner piece, cleaned the paint off but it looks like it's been attacked with a cheese grater before being painted over. I smoothed it down with a file and polished it but unfortunately the anodized finish was long gone before I got to it. I need to find a way to protect it.

Let us know if you figure something out. I bought some from eBay for that reason.

The correct term would be "phenolic plastic" (floats), GM Quadrajet carbs were famous for a heavy (saturated) float and anybody with experience in rebuilding those carbs would just get a float along with the carb kit for a good rebuild.

Just a quick googly and I see Holley is making Nitrophyl Float's so someone thought better I guess although I still see Phenolic, Center Hung floats for a Mikuni carbs available at Summit Racing.

Nice work your doing, haven't followed every page but what I peek at every so often is top notch!

:thumbsup::thumbsup:
