Welp, these valves are pretty mediocre now. 2 left on this head and then I'll lap them in.

They've recieved do-or-die reface. I'm surprised I had any compression at all.

Surprisingly, all the valves lapped in nicely.

That's that head done. Other one next, but my generator ran out of gasoline and I don't have any more 2-cycle oil.

It is what it is.

What's left of my workshop doesn't have power any more- the distribution box was on the back wall on the other side of the building.
So, I just fired up the small generator I have. Much easier than running a 50m extension cord from the house.

Lifted the other eight valves out, I'll tidy those up over the next couple days.

This head is less bad; that, however is relative. It's still bad but I've a little less work to do.

With just a gentle skim of the sealing face you can see just how badly these valves have burned.

Faced down smooth and flat. Correct angle takes a steady hand.

Repeat. Got the intakes to clean up next, then the head and those will then lap in.

We'll see how they last. Ha.

I'm not aiming for longevity in this case, the engine is too far gone for that.
Just enough to get it going.

Also, hot on the heels of another thread, can anyone tell me a bit more than I already know about the way my car left the factory?

I can tell you it was scheduled to be built on the 13th of April 1966.

I usually use a fender tag code site to decipher the rest...

That's remarkably accurate. I'm used to week or month codes being as tight as you get!
At least it was not a Friday car.


So, 318 poly (other site to decode vin was wrong it seems) with a radio and factory air; white body with blue roof.

What color is B for the interior? I cannot find that listed.

Scheduled date does not necessarily mean it went down the assemby line that very day... but we can believe, can't we?

Mmm, lovely.

And the same, but cleaned up. I'm going to claim golf ball physics on this being better than stock. The random pattern of dimples on the surface will cut down on boundary layer shear and allow better gas flow into the cylinder. It's a high performance part.

The others on this side weren't so bad. All faces cleaned up.. okay. Those can grind in to the seats tonight if it doesn't rain.

Went all Heath-Robinson this afternoon and connected the remains of the workshop to the small generator.

Nice, in theory, until the modern LED fixtures couldn't tolerate the rather raw output from the generator and went POP.

Still, the fluorescent tube still works and I managed to clean up the head. It got a bit warm to lap the valves in so that's a task for later.

Got all the valves lapped in, and it got a bit late to be running the generator so I shut things down for the night.
Tomorrow I'll put the springs back on.
The guides for the center two exhaust valves are a touch slack, but not so bad they won't work.

Well, it's together, has something resembling oil in the pan but refuses to fire.

It popped and banged but that's it.
Compression is good, carburetor sucks but there's fuel there, ignition shows fire at 5° ATDC on plug 1.

All it did was cough and sneeze and fart fire out the carb a few times.

Yup. Started right up and fired on all 8 but the carburetor is junk. I'll go get a rebuild kit for it.

It's liking to backfire and sneeze back out the carb a bunch. Put rebuild kit on the carb, float keeps getting stuck.

Annoyances.

I'm pretty sure I got the firing order correct.
