1966 Newport

They require the matching deep dish steel wheel.
Kelsey Hayes 14x6.
They will not fit standard skinny 14 inch wheels that are on the car.
Been through this already, and I am just giving the heads up.

Sorry Leaburn, I hate to be the one to say you're wrong on this one. The deep dish covers will work on the 5-1/2" wide rims. I was fairly certain on that, but before I got myself into trouble, I pulled out some wheels and did a bit of testing. That's good news for Ray. As long as the Newport has it's original wheels, he can install a set of deep dishes if he so chooses.

Here's one of the correct style rims. It's very shallow in the center where the lugs are.

This one is a 5-1/2 incher:

The covers don't sit tight to the lip of the wheel. Chrysler left lots of room for wheel weights.

Next up is the same wheel cover on a 6 inch rim.

6 incher has the same gap at the lip.

While on the subject of deep dishes, I've been working on a way to adapt them to mount onto 15 inch rims to solve the problem of the discontinued 225/75-R14 tires. I think I'm getting close to a solution. Stay tuned for an update in the future.

jeff. cbarge and i have exchanged PMs. his set of covers looks outstanding.

wheels on my car are definitely original pieces. I gotta confirm the size though.

the 225/75R-14s OOP (out of production)? bummer.

I do LIKE that cover though.. hopefully it'll all work out somehow.

thanks man!

btw, that measurement tool is slick ..never seen one before. And I'm old! :)

beautiful NOS covers but pricey. dont think i want them thi$$ bad.:)

The style on the car. Guess this is the "base model" cover. Slightly different centers, but with the "gold" color theme.

I broke out my rims and test fitted a driver deep dish. Both on a 5.5 and 6 inch.
They do stick out more on the 5.5 compared to the 6 inch...5.5 shown

My point is they sit better with the correct rims. Yes they will work on 5.5 but will stick out.

Interesting.

Any chance you can spot a Chrysler part number on that 6" rim?

I have a 1967 parts book and it lists 4 different part numbers for C body 14" rims. A 5", 5-1/2", and 6" wide rim. Plus there's the 14x6 magnum 500.

The '67 Charger uses the C body 5-1/2" rim because it came standard with deep dish covers, where the rest of the B bodies used their own 5-1/2" rim.

It may be a case where the deep dish covers just happen to fit nicer on the KH wheels. I'll have to keep an eye out and see if I come across any of those in my collection. They are easy to spot with the rectangular bumps between the lug holes. Unfortunately, I don't have any cars that originally came with deep dish covers, so I can't check that angle. A friend of mine did, a '66 300 with the spinners. He may still have the wheels. I'll have to ask when I see him Friday evening.

couple more .. no reason other than i dig these old brochure images

The 1966 brochure certainly has some beautiful artwork, though they didn't quite get the grill right on the Newports for some reason. That was the first vintage car brochure that I ever bought, as I had a '66 New Yorker at the time.

Chrysler was really pushing the deep dish covers in '66, but very few cars were ordered with them. I'd say one out of every fifty at most, not including the 300's.

That set of NOS covers on eBay is really sweet. I agree that it's too much money for a driver, and many would say too much money for anything, but they really aren't all that much more than when you could buy them through Chrysler. My collision book is from 1972, and lists those covers at $25.61 each. Adjusted for inflation, that comes out to $157.95 in 2020 dollars. That would total $631.80 for the set.

These two 14" rims are from slightly different eras. The 5.5" is a safety-type with four hubcap bumps. The 6" is likely closer to what would have been available in the mid 60s, except it has the smaller hubcap.
Proper wheelcover fit is best established with the wheel on the car, and checked on a front wheel to make sure the hub clears.

My wheels appear to look like this dimensionally

img_9768-jpg.jpg

by appearance, the "depth" of my Newp's wheel would seem to accept the "deep dish" turbine wheel cover. giving the "look" below
img_9771-jpg.jpg

ostensibly, my '66 14x5.5 has a similar looking face as the 14x6 cbarge shows.

boiling it down, and Gregg48203's astute observation, the wheels on my car fit fine and with little doubt are original to the car.

i therefore should try to swap covers on my existing wheels using bigmoparjeff's experience. that does NOT mean i would NOT also wind up with this problem the cbarge shows -- because eyeballin' my 14x5.5 wheel isnt accurate enough

why bother? that deep dish turbine wheel cover is slick, is what i would have wanted, and appaarently could have gotten, on my Newport --- if I wasnt in the first grade when my bronze Newp was new. :)
