good morning and thanks for the add! I'm looking at possibly doing a trade deal tomorrow. I have a 74 charger that needs some work to be long distance road worthy ( floor pans are toast, k member needs replaced, rear crank seal installed incorrectly) and a person wants to trade me a 66 Newport. It's all original (from what I can see) with 25k miles. I'm wondering if the deal is right for both sides? I put some time and $$$ into my 74 but I'm unsure if the deal is fair for both sides. Looking for opinions. Hopefully the photos upload for references!

i guess i dont know the true value of the 66. i understand it a bit on my charger but was just seeing if its kinda fair for both

DO IT!!!! Don’t over think it. From the work you described your charger needs, get out now while you still have some money in your savings account.

ya you are right there, but like i said i was unsure on the values of newports, im only in my mid 30s haha

yes, i am not a fan of facebook for information, i was brought up on forums like these and they seem to bring the most knowledge to the table.

Neither car is ever going to be a big dollar machine.

Bottom line is if you are happy with the deal and he is happy with the deal and both of you have disclosed what you know about your own cars, and you both want to go ahead with the deal, then yes it is a fair deal to both of you.

I agree I would make the trade as well.

yes my car definitely has a pile of work that needs done to it still and his is inspected running driving stopping. he actually drove it from 80 miles away i was impressed. it will need a few things of course but mechanically its a beast. i probably will as i like it alot more in person than in pictures when i first saw it...

If you want a driver for yourself and to enjoy the pastime, then do the deal. If you want to flip the 66 and make some quick bux, back away slowly. I think the 66 is a better car, but not if I was in it to make a buck.

I'm not looking to make a buck, I just wanted a fair trade and don't want to be tied down to a project my whole.life

I doubt it's a 25,000 mile car. Not impossible but more likely 125,000. Looks decent enough none the less. If the mileage can be verified, double bonus!

Do your due diligence on the 66 to make sure there aren't any hidden issues like your Charger has. You don't want to swap one money pit for another.

The Chrysler has some rust poking thru on the driver side front fender. Get the car up on a rack and do a frame inspection. If the car is otherwise solid, it is probably a trade of about equal value. Your rusty charger is likely going to cost $10k or more to repair the floors and frame. Cars with rusty lower ends usually have lots of other hidden rust.

Ultimately, the Charger might be worth more money, when restored or sensibly "upgraded", but to get there can take a bunch of money and time. Not to mention possibly having to have somebody else to the work. I suspect that what's needed to do that deal is available. Especially the floorpan/body stuff. Of course, if you upgrade the front end, as many now advocate doing, to a coil-over set-up, even more money.

Do check the Chrysler on a lift, though, just to know what you're getting and what might need attention. Just part of knowing where the car's been most of its life.

As much as I liked that generation of Charger when it was new, I'd take the '66 Chrysler in teh current times. Provided it is as decent as it appears to be. Other thing is that as traffic now moves at over posted speed limits on the Interstates, the '66 will be better for that type of "cruise", from experience.

Enjoy!

Thanks for all the input! I'm more than likely going to do the deal just because I no longer have time to strip the car down (the charger) and rebuild it the way it needs to be. The 66 seems to be more of a survivor and would be perfect to go cruise in. I'm definitely torn as a Newport really isn't a dream car of mine but at the same time I just want to enjoy driving on the road while I'm still youngish, haha.
