Ads are effectively irritating

I kain't stand using any kind of a fone to surf the internet! My shop laptop is ancient using Windoze 7 and it works fine even with all the ads! Got off the dang phone!!!!!

It takes a lot of money and time to make a website work. We're getting a free way to communicate with our Mopar brothers and sisters! The easiest way to pay for a website is to let advertisers place ads. Yes, popup ads are annoying, but they pay for the website. Becoming a good member here for a measley $40 a year is worth not seeing the excessive popup ads! Joey and Mike are doing us a great service letting us communicate with each other that wasn't even possible 25 years ago!! And with the increase in inflation the last four years, everything is more expensive including car parts and running a website!!

You missed my point.
Something changed recently for the worse. No communication from the management that maintenance costs have risen and to keep the site free, the ad content is going to increase, or you must pay for access with reduced or zero ads’

That’s the point.

I pay the $40 here and use ad blockers for everything else. I really got a laugh out of seeing a advertisement in a YouTube video for an ad blocker that works with YouTube along with a message about how ad blockers violate YouTube's user agreement.

I do see both sides of the argument, but we're closer to the movie "Idiocracy" becoming a documentary.

Where in your user agreement does this say any of this is a requirement?

Any owner of any website is free to make any changes to THEIR free use site as they see fit whenever they want.

The user's choice is to visit, or not, the site with or without a fitness of use agreement.

The owner of the local bar is under no obligation to ask me if they should change the color of the bathrooms or what color they should be or notify me how that affects the price of a beer.

It’s not a requirement. I was under the impression (incorrectly so) that this site was a place of attraction, not promotion, for people to contribute, learn, enjoy and share their collective experiences regarding the C body Mopar s. I was mistaken for believing that the people who own this site were interested in keeping their users informed of the environment. That’s on me.

From how I see it, not communicating with the users (gold or not) what is going on with the sites operation is not being attractive.

Apple has operated this way since its inception and I continue to be unenamored with this approach.

You are right. It’s the owners site and he can run it however he damn well cares to.

uBlock Origin is probably the best ad blocker hands down. Dunno if you can get it on phones though. You can disable it on specific sites too (like FCBO ), great if you want to support the site and it has a bunch of other privacy-related features too (can disable google link obfuscation, which lets you copy links from search results again without scrambling it, and as a bonus, stops them tracking what results you do click on).

I feel like the amount of ads wherever you go have gotten to this stage largely because of greed, and how commercialised and sanitised the internet has become. Not saying that the admins of this site are doing it to become billionaires, but rather, their hosting providers are likely charging a lot; yes it's a business at the end of the day and the goal of any business is to make profit, but when they say things like "hosting your site is sooo expensive you'll need to give us more money now thank you for your understanding :)))" and you look up how much revenue they made in the past year, it makes you wonder...

Web designs from 20 or so odd years ago may have been ugly, but there was a certain charm, honesty - and probably the biggest one - simplicity, to them when it was just people putting stuff on the internet for fun. Just look at the old Space Jam website, it hasn't been changed since 1996. Warner Bros initially planned to take it down but clearer heads prevailed and had it kept up as a slice of history. It even got updated to reflect the EU's GDPR thing back in 2018 or so that made nearly every site ask you which cookies you wanted enabled when visiting. Similarly, this site and its sister sites haven't really made things look super fancy, and I really do appreciate it because it keeps everything running nice and smooth, and looks more or less like a forum should. A fun thing to do is right click > view source on the pages on that site - you can see fun little comments from the developers at the time. It really shows just how much has changed.

But anyway, if you do click that link, notice just how much faster everything loads. It seems that around 2015 or so, is when the whole "just throw more power/resources at it" method of web design and computer programming seems to have really taken off, and it's resulted in ever-increasingly bloated websites with lots of fancy animations or inline auto-playing videos and scripts to shove ads or flyouts in people's faces, resulting in a web page displaying less content than if same page were made in the mid-2000s while also somehow consuming more than twice the resources and sucking up all your phone or computer's power, because the designers and managers demanded ads fill every possible whitespace with ads because THE LINE MUST GO UP.

Rockauto's site design hasn't really been changed or updated significantly in 10-15 or so years, and look how fast that site loads compared to a lot of similar parts sites. They seem to have ignored the crowd that demands things look shiny and new, and demand change just for the sake of change, and that probably enables them to keep maintenance costs down. There's still a few sites out there that look like they were made in 2005 or so, and haven't really been updated since (or regularly get updated but the user interface hasn't changed), and the difference in loading speeds and how much resources they consume versus a modern website is night and day.

This trend of "minimalism" simply meaning functions now being hidden behind even more buttons or menus than before or in unintuitive locations, together with lack of optimisation behind the scenes because "why bother making efficient, just throw MOAR CPU POWER at it" ending up in a website or program taking up twice or even three times the system resources it should, has pervaded the internet and computing in general and I can't wait for the day it dies in a napalm filled hole. Rant over.

I'll assume you meant " Get off the dang phone!!!!!" You cranky bro? Most "phones" have been computers for well over a decade now. This comes with pros and cons, mostly cons.
Not cranky at all lol. Pretty much need a somewhat of a cool head to be a moderator.....I'm not one here though. Problem with using a phone here or on any site is that the screen is way too little for me. I've done some moderating like when at a doctor's office and sitting in the waiting room and it's a rpita!
I use my phone for almost everything. I do have a laptop but use it a lot less.
Progressive lenses help a lot.
Read above lol
My old laptop has been collecting dust for ages now. I'm already paying a phone bill, no point paying for a separate internet line/modem for my amount of use.
Everything I do on my laptop is soooo much easier and like the much bigger screen plus I post ads on FBBO at times and even that is much easier.

What HASN'T gone up in price!!!!? Everything went through the roof since the scamdemic....

And along those lines, There is only so much room on a cell phone screen so many pieces of the website puzzle are not included. A small ad on a phone could take up half a screen where on a laptop or PC may only be a square in the corner.
