AMC Gremlin

More crazy bodywork. Does not have to be perfect. Will go over with bondo anyway. Then rust proof the whole thing with Krown ;)

Complete engine rebuild kit on the way as well.

Both rockers left and right, complete floors, wheel arches are done. Now they are starting on the front and rear valances, and the entire rear end of the car. Lots and lots of patches everywhere, but nicely made and welded flush to the rest of the body.

Rear valance repair complete. Basically a new one made from scratch... Now onto the rear deck lid around the hatch area.

Rear hatch area replaced along with the trunk floors. Another week or so of cutting and welding, then another week of aligning all the body panels and getting the fitment right. Hope to have it at the paint shop next month. It'll be painted by the same person as my Newport a few years back.

More updates. Body work mostly done. Now onto aligning and fitting all the panels and getting it ready for stripping the rest of the paint/ rust and then onto paint.

Recently recieved all the bits for the engine rebuild. Other items i still need to order are a new carb, alternator, starter, complete suspension, complete steering links, and all brake parts.

There’s a LOT of effort in your car! Great work and it’ll bring much joy soon!

You may have already said this, but what engine, transmission, rear are you going with in this?

Someone must have been a little high in 1973 ordering this car.

It's a 232, torquecommand trans, manual drum brakes, with factory Air. The color was green with the white hockey stripes. Oh, forgot to mention, manual steering. lol

I have no idea what gear ratio it has in the rear. EDIT/ looked it up on google. 1973 should have the std 3.08, which is a shame, because my previous 1971 Gremmie had 2.37 which was a blast to drive, nice long gears and smooth gliding down the expressways...

Thanks. It's similar to the one we have: 258, 3-speed manual, manual brakes and steering, AC, Dana 15 rear. Also a '73. Of course, all that is gone now, but the manual steering and brakes remain.

Rear air deflector test mounted, and a custom made solid hitch - i bet it would tow a 2 ton cbody ;)

The doors and hood were all junk, and are being rebuilt at the body shop now. The cowl has also being cut open and is being patched. Wouldnt want water intrusion on a new carpet ;)

Is there more structure to that hitch than what is shown?
I was expecting this question :) Yes, the bolts u can see on the sides go inside into stock angle mounts (which are originally a structure brace), and those angle bars are bolted onto the rear subframe. Also, from underneath it will be supported by a seperate bracket to further strenghten the structure. Bascially, to remove the hitch you would have to rip the entire rear of the car off with the subframe ;P

A few pics of the hitch setup. A steel perimiter beam on the outside (doubling as a dumper mount), on the inside, and underneath - a little overkill. The weakest point seems the be the hitch itself, problably would be best to weld it to the structure, and then use the screws to further strenghten it.

All i plan on using is a bicycle rack, and a maybe a lightweight camper (like a 1000lbs max).

Update on the engine, almost ready for paint, just slap the head w/valve cover on.

The body is nearly done, a little work on the cowl and firewall area. Some aligning of body panels then off to the paint shop, hopefully at the end of June.

On wednesday it's off to the paint shop. The underside has been painted already. The paint will be stripped and body prepared. Going forward...

The engine is ready.

Is that bolt-on knob-hitch common in EU? I've never seen one like that.

Not too common, but have seen some. Apart from it being bolted on, i'm contemplating having it welded onto the steel structure, the bolts seem to be the weakest link which i am not liking too much.
