DON'T weld it. It will alter the metallugy to an unknown extent.
For those 2 bolts - use Grade 8 bolts/nuts and hardened washers to get the most capacity.

Bolts in tension are stronger than bolts in shear (for same components). But bolts in a case like this would ordinarily be put in double-shear, which then exceeds the tensile strength.
But that's all immaterial with this hitch-ball.
 
I'm thinking weld the block, then bolt ball with 1/2 course thread 25,000 lbs tensile load bolts.
Besides, it's going to bend that down bar before anything else happens.
 
Good thing you are rebuilding the front end. When a tie rod breaks in these, it creates a very specific crease in the front of the fender, radiating out from the wheel well as the front tire hits it from going out of bounds.

At the paint shop. Lots of body panels needing alignment, and further finishing off before paint. It was a different metal man performing the work than on my Newport, and the job is not done very well in some areas. Fortunately the paint guy worked at a body shop, and will fix these areas before paint prepping and then paint. For example look at the doors and front fender.. ;) front valance also far from good

Further progress. Just ordered the X package stripe kit. Next month the car will be in the paint booth.

Washing all the interior plastic pieces, and packing them for paint. The trunk plastics are all broken up. I will try to have them fixed. Everything is going in black.

I changed my mind on the interior, and will be black & gray (seats, carpet & all). I wasn't to sure on the blue. Black will also be easier to do.

The dashboard and lower package tray is being painted and covered in new vinyl.

What do you guys think? I reckon it looks good. Next up is sticking on the x package black stripe kit, and then clearcoating it again.

I'm impressed! What you're doing would be like restoring a Polski FIAT 124 in North America Parts availability would be almost non-existent.

Very true. But worse, parts in the US for the Gremlin are few and far between - I am talking about interior bits, a real nightmare to find anything in decent shape, NOS is very hard to come by, much harder than for a fuselage c-body.

I guess most of these Gremlins went to the scrap yard, and not many folks thought of saving them. A "throw away" type of car unfortunately :( . To me, they have something to like about them :)

I've been an AMC fan for years! I've never heard the Gremlin being referred to as 1970 1/2. I know they were introduced on April 1, 1970, so the latter half of the production cycle, but have never heard them called this. If so, then the '70 Vega and Pintos should be called that too.

They're not.

from what i read previously in multiple sources, when introduced they were a 70's model year - ahead of the Pinto & Vega. The 71 was the first proper production year from what I gather.
