And so it begins...

WOW!! I can see why
X2! What a beautiful ride! My engine looks very similar to that, except for the chrome covers, and the intake is painted on mine. I may actually look at getting an old set of those finned ones and paint them turquoise like that. Very cool look!

They were painted with factory paint over the existing black finish. I then took a piece of wood with fine paper and polished the fins. Painting over the black gave the covers a satin finish, painting over a polished set would have made them shine more.

I get ill when I see engine compartments like that. I want to hide in a box in shame somewhere :-(

Hahaha! No, I put that pointer there for a best guess at where I think my redline should be. When we were tuning the carb, it seemed like it was probably best shifting it in the 5200 range. I haven't stopwatched it yet, but it seemed like that was where the cam and intake was starting to sign off. Besides, these are still stock 40 year old internals, and there's just no need to spin it way up there just to eek out a tenth or two. This is no drag car here, and I'm not gonna beat on it like it is.:eusa_wall:

I get it brother .. based on your mods I'd say you're probably pretty close to a stock 68-9 383 HP so your max torque is probably in the 3400-3800 range and max HP is probably in the 4600-5000 range to give you an idea of the power band. Don't know how much hotter than stock your config is but from what I remember it's pretty close with the AVS I think, .268 cam, manifolds, duals etc.

Yep, I would agree with your assessment of being pretty close to a slightly warmed 383HP. Truth be told, that's kind of the mark I was shooting for when I started the mods. In driving the car, I would pretty much also agree with those powerband figures. It's no stoplight derby king, but it's definitely quick enough to put a big smile on my face!:toothy10: I know it's WAY more fun to drive now than it was stock, that's for sure!

So what's next?
Well, I've got a bunch of detail items to take care of. I need to change the speedo gear because it's off like 25mph now because of the gear change and tire size difference. Doh! Also gonna super scrub the carpeting. There are parts of it where the floor mats are almost a perfect match, but the footwell area is much darker. I'm hoping it lightens up some with a good scrubbing. I think I'm also gonna try to steam clean the headliner, and I've got to make up some plugs or something to cover the rear holes where the shoulder belts used to be. I'm gonna change out the spare tire because it's pretty dry rotted. And I'm still waiting on the paint shop guy to get me some paint matched for the dash piece under the column, so I can get that installed. The dash pad itself will eventually be fixed, but that's probably going to wait until winter time.
I guess the only real "mod" left to do for now is to install the stereo. I've got a dual speaker bracket on the way for the dash for the 3-1/2" fronts, and I've got a couple 6x9's for the rear. I'm thinking about maybe a small sub enclosure hidden up behind the rear seat in the trunk with a small amp. Still on the fence on that though, we shall see. I have a CD stereo with an MP3 hookup that I was hoping to put in the glovebox and run that cable to the ashtray for my Ipod, but it doesn't look like there is enough depth in there to do that, so it may have to go under the seat. I just can't seem to bring myself to putting it in the dash.

I guess that's about it for now. Thanks to everyone for the continued interest and assistance with my little project here!

O.K. Mopardik. Are we gonna see you and it at Carlisle next month? You'll probably find your aluminum rocker covers there and I alwayz carry a droll towel when I get close to somethin' nice. Jer

Thanks again, guys!

BigBarney, unfortunately I won't make it to Carlisle this year. We are taking a family trip out west, so my vacation time is spoken for already. I have always wanted to make it up there though, maybe next year.

Bulldogchesty, don't worry about it, I'm sure that ragtop of yours will soon put mine to shame! In all fairness, I have to admit that I cheated a little on this one. Unlike others I have had the (dis)pleasure to resto and mod, I started with an absolute cream puff this time. It was an Ebay score that I just had a feeling about, so I rolled the dice! :toothy9:

Wow, really nice job on the car man! She is badass looking. How does it run? I'm sure it's much stronger now. Again, excellent job!
