Batavia Downs ‘73 Newport

Zach is back on the horse. Missed you working on a C-body.lol

For the moment at least lol. I’m almost out of metal. Should have enough to do the other quarter, but am going to have to get some for the floors/wheel well.

I contacted Batavia again last night to see if someone else could help me. Waiting to hear back hopefully. They replied with the same clip that’s been posted a couple times already, but asked if they or anyone they know of might have other footage.

The guy who posted that 1980 clip has a website of old horse racing footage. I contacted him as well. It’s an old website though, so not holding my breath. I’ll reach out to the Batavia history site today.

Passenger side is just about done. Have a few pin holes to weld up that were discovered after primer. I’ll tend to em when I go back and do the wheel well on that side.

Got the barge turned around in the garage, and now on to the drivers side. I got the trim off, and started stripping the paint on the quarter. Called it a day.

I may have spoke too soon on this wheel well. Luckily it seems to only be on the corners so far. Why can the **** never be “easy”? Always in some spot where 18 pieces of metal come together and you have to modify each one.

It’s getting there. Gotta clean up some welds. I do believe all the gunk that came out was old oil. Stuff is nasty, and dried hard. It held everything together though. Should have just bondoed right over it! LOL

Been plucking away a couple hours here and there at night. Had a half day at work today. Took advantage of the time! Finished up the rear of the quarter, and got the top of the wheel arch done.

I also got some new floor pans for it yesterday!

LOL! I got a kick out of my bow tie buddy at work. He asked me why I just don’t buy replacement panels?? He was unsure of why I started laughing so hard lol. This may be a new sunroof panel too!? Who knows...

I was searching around for info in the car the other night. Didn’t find any history, but did find an old for sale ad from when I bought it!

I did a little stalking, and found the guy I bought it from in Facebook. I reached out to him, asking for help... he doesn’t seem interested in helping though. All I want is the owner before him. Damn! LOL

While waiting for the metal to cool between rounds, I did some more investigating. Luckily the drivers side wheel well is still pristine, minus 1 quarter sized hole. Kinda weird, the Monaco was somewhat the same. Both cars had the passenger side wheel wells eaten up the most. Wonder why that is.

The passenger side in the rust belt always takes the brunt of the rust. Winter slush and salt always end up near the shoulder because of the crown on the roads.

Tried working up motivation to go out and work on her today, but think I went a little too hard yesterday.... Did go out for an hour or so, but just not feeling it.

Did find a clogged drain hole!! Horse track dirt?? LOL. Not sure why it rotted out the metal above though. Assuming from sitting in grass with the other idiot caused that, with the hole already on the bottom by the rocker.

I’ve noticed one spot of bondo in the same spot on both side on the rockers under the doors. I figured it was just a terrible bondo job, but this side looked worse. After poking at it discovered the outer edge of a hole too. Great!!

But it actually wasn’t the bondo. Looks like a terrible lead job. Is this factory??

It’s got a decent hump in it that I thought was the bondo.

Can also see what’s left of the original floor, and the non painted sheet metal installed to substitute the floor. Gonna be a fun repair!

I called it quits after that...

Do have a bit of good news though!! I bugged the original guy I bought it from one more time. Got a couple names, and a phone number to the actual horse people that owned it!! Saweet!! I called and left a message. Now to bug them until I get some answers lol.

No new pics at the moment, but am making some progress! Inner wheel well and inner rocker have been replaced. Outer section is being fabbed up currently.

Good news is the bit of detective work is starting to pay off a little bit for finding history on the car. Called a guy with a number to a guy, to call that guy sort of deal lol. But!! Got a hold of a gentleman named Mike, who may have had a hand in building the car for Batavia Downs. He still runs a gate company, and is in business. He informed me of quite a few things on the car, and was able to verify the brackets above the diff were for dual coil springs on each side to support the weight in the trunk. Also apparently the hydraulic machine in the trunk was built out of surplus’s WW2 parts.

He unfortunately does not have much more info to share, but is going to contact the manager for Batavia Downs as they are still quite close due to business. Sweet! He also gave me some more contacts to get a hold of for pictures. On to the next hunt!

Son of a!!

Just started cooking with some fire, and got a pin hole in the gas hose for the welder! Wonderful! Being a cheaper hobby welder, seems Lincoln is more inclined you replace rather than fix it. Had to dismantle the whole damn thing to get the lead off. The sleeve on the lead is literally shrink wrap. Was fun getting the hoses and wiring out of it! Now to find some hose. Gonna be even more fun trying to snake the hose back through the shrink wrap.

Really can’t complain too much. This little welder has more than earned its keep around here. Re-bodied a Monaco with it, as well as replaced several body panels spanning 6 vehicles so far, on top of other things here and there LOL

Just as I thought... All the local welding places laughed at me lol. Even the local Hose place laughed at me as well. F&$k sakes! But alas! Lowes came to the rescue. They had some small hose in stock. Tiny bit bigger than what was on it, but same I.D. Also it’s a fluid hose instead of an air hose. Oh well. I bought 2 Incase this one doesn’t last long.

There was no cramming the lead back through the shrink wrap unfortunately.... Specially with the new bigger air hose. I had to slice it. I wrapped it all back together with tape. Oh well. It she last long enough to finish the car, I believe it was $20 well spent. If not, even still. A new welder looks nice too! As stated I got my $$’s worth outa this one.

Back to our regular scheduled program. She has a rocker corner again! That took forever! A couple pin holes to weld up, but I’ll take it!

Still gotta cut out that Bull S#it above it. I did take a second to mount a road wheel. So classy looking!! First time throwing one on since I got em. Gonna piss some people off, but I believe they are screening for some raised white lettered tires lol.

Quarter is finished up. She’s gonna need a little mud, but atleast there is solid metal to put it over instead of rust.

While I had the little access hole cut out, I shot a bunch of rust bullet metal blast down the rocker. Good news, the drain hole is working properly. It took a minute or 2 for the rust bullet to eat up the rust particles, but once it did, she started draining out the other drain holes too. Good deal! Hopefully that will stop and rotting from the inside out.

With that out of the way, figured I’d take a break from laying on the concrete to laying on the cars floor lol.

I really don’t see the rhyme or reason for what was going on...... if I had to guess, he started ripping her apart on the outside (although again, no rhyme or reason) then started ripping the interior out. Only thing I can figure is the floors scared him. Either that or the quotes he got for a repair scared him.... IDK

Got the interior out and floors cleaned out. I’m not sure whether to be happy, sad, or scared. The rot in the rear floor pans is where the body over laps... It’s only a unibody car, what’s the worst that can happen?? LOL

Luckily I’m still here! The mild hasn’t killed me yet!! Yuck!!!

Quite a few more pacing days witness marks. Lots of plasma cut holes left in the floor, along with holes where something was mounted.

Another thing I don’t get. Let’s remove all the screws to the sunroof bracketing. The ***** is F-ing welded to the roof! What were you doing??? Where are the damn screws?? LOL Jebus...
