Sorry have to share my opinion here. We must have safety first. This is a good example of what not to do, not very secure method. Try blocks or a jack stand UNDER the trans so it cannot come down on you.
I was pulling. An engine from a parts car in a hurry and the engine trans fell from the hoist back into the car. It happened SO FAST and it had crashed down back into the car. If a person was under it there was no way to react and pull a hand or limb out.

I'm sorry that I didn't sufficiently explain what I did during the removal of my engine. Of course, I positioned a floor jack (so as not to dent the pan) under the transmission prior to lifting the engine. I then removed all the bell housing bolts and wiggled the engine and trans to separate them. With the floor jack still in place under the transmission, I lifted the engine out. Then I threaded the aforementioned coat hanger wire through one of the top bell housing bolt holes and tied it to one of the hood torsion bars. This action allowed me to remove that floor jack and keep the transmission in its place with out having to disconnect any linkage, coolant lines, etc. Does that procedure work for you?

I just bent up a metal tube that I had around the shop so that it would hook over the torsion bars and under the transmission bellhousing to hold up the transmission.

I laid angle iron across frame with holes to pick up trans housing.
Personally one of the best things about my newport is being able to pull rad cradle off car with things still attached to it and fenders/hood stay on car. The angle/height of install is smaller and safer. Do like the whole fr clip off without subframe idea but haven't tried it.

These several ideas sound good, thanks ripinator.
Getting hurt while working on the car must be avoided. I had the neighbors son over a lot helping while he was a teenager and his parents and I were on the same page. His dad worked on cars also and he liked being involved. He works at a repair shop now in his mid 30’s.
Take the extra step to be safe.
