I think it is fabulous that WE found this engine after all these years and that it didn't wind up in the B&E camp.

If those guys had the choice to use it to 'correctly clone' a 318 car into something it never was...
Or allow a deserving V-code GT to get an original V-code GT engine...

Those guys would pick the B&E clone near-immediately.
90% of them, anyway.
 
Great details to document as there are just so few examples built, let alone surviving today!
 
Just curious Trev, would this engine block be a good candidate for acid dipping in order to return it to virgin metal as new or are there downsides for your purposes to doing that? I have had one done and it turned out awesome and looked like the block had just come from the foundry some 50+ years ago.

My friend with the machine shop in the bay area used Evapo-Rust for dipping blocks for a while, it works great and cleans out the rust from the coolant passages too. Just need a big plastic tub and space to put it for a few days. He stopped using that method because he just doesn't have room anymore.

It would work well for the block in this thread though, after running it through the jet wash to remove any oil or grease.
 
I would imagine those parts are worth saving just for the historical research significance. Could you re-use the pistons and rods?
 
I have heard of shops sleeving the block, not sure if that would be an option.

You would only sleeve if the block is already bored to the max, if excessive corrosion exists in the walls, or if oversize pistons are not available (very rare engines).... In this case of it being a 440, parts are readily available and in many sizes.

NOS oil sump fasteners for the baffled oil pan & NOS rocker cover grommets, for PCV and vent tube cap…baby steps…:)

Try some gentle paint cleaner/polish to bring up the finish without loosing the lettering. That made in Canada stamp is something I never see on a restoration. My bottom feeder air cleaner looked like yours when I started cleaning it, but no lettering to protect.
