Checking out a 66 300

I don't think so. They both fit in the exact same location in the car. I can take a no BS measurement later for everyone.

On another note, does anyone know if we can get new filler necks? Mine isn't bad, but I'd like to at see if I can find a new one.

Don't think they make new filler necks, but they make new gaskets for the filler neck and would recommend changing it since you have it out.

Don't know if it was mentioned earlier, (too lazy to look. :) ) Make sure you use your old retaining ring for your sending unit.

Is it really necessary to replace the old gas tank if it is full of crud? When my son bought the Plymouth I now own, the crud was so bad in the tank that no matter how many times you emptied the gas filter it immediately filled up and clogged every time you tried to start the car. He had the tank 'boiled out' and it has been perfect ever since.

You can also have them lined/sealed which would be good protection against rust caused by moisture caused by ethanol which you should be treating with additives anyway.

You know I really contemplated having the tank redone. I just found that for the same price (and less in some cases) I could have a new tank. I would have gone the renew route if this hadn't have gone in so easily.

Beautiful car!!

Thanks!

This sounds like another recommendation for one ounce of marine two-cycle oil (with TC-W3) per five gallons of gas . . .

Rip, I don't understand why a little upper head lubricant can offset the crappy effects of ethanol.
Besides, wouldn't a little Mystery Oil do the same thing?
BTW, Mystery Oil is motor oil thinned with acetone and has a mint scent added to it.

Stan: The big thing about marine oil / TC-W3 is that it provides lubrication to all components in the fuel delivery process and therfore counteracts some of the ill effects of ethanol and other crappy ingredients in today's gas. It also provides some lube to the ring pack on the pistons - promoting better sealing and combustion. And yes, Marvel Mystery Oil would work too, but it is very expensive when compared the marine 2-cycle you can buy at WallyWorld for $12.00 per gallon.

I should also add that the TC-W3 additive package brings along some other benefits regarding cleaning of items such as valves, spark plugs and the combustion chamber. Anyone who has ever torn down a 2-cycle engine will remember how clean it is inside.

Well I'm perfectly willing to try mystery oil or the marine with tc wc3. Why not, I have a new complete fuel system.

Hijack Alert (kinda sorta)
OK, I was looking for something else because of this thread and I tripped across the following discussion.
We've talked often about penetrating oil but this discussion takes it further a few more steps. Read completely. Very interesting.

Homemade penetrating oil

Figured I'd go ahead and show everyone what's been completed so far on the car. I finally finished up my Sniper EFI install this weekend. I was skeptical about it at first but the install and setup were exactly as easy as the claims.

I've out about 70 miles on it so far and she's running great. I'm only running fuel control right now but I'll probably move over to timing control before the summer is up. If anyone is on the fence with this setup feel free to ask any questions you can think of.

For me I'm using a RobbMC Powersurge fuel pump, street fire ignition that's triggered by a Pertronix setup.

WOW! Very neat upgrade you have done there. Also, your car looks very familiar to me. . . The Ripinator on the lake at Geneva, NY

I'm seriously considering an EFI for my Imp., how much did you end up spending soup to nuts?

Jimmyse23 - You will LOVE it when you get timing control on that.

I don't have EFI on anything, but I have used MSD ign boxes along with their knob-adjustable timing module on several cars. It is intended as a 0-15° retard device, but I just install the dizzy 15° advanced, and use it fully retarded for normal operation. Where it makes a NOTICEABLE difference (on every engine I've installed it on) is when the engine is cold. after initial startup, crank the knob up for 15 more degrees, and the idle quality and throttle response is much improved for the first few miles. The drawback is it's a manual thing, and must be fully retarded as the engine warms up or it'll ping like crazy.

Now imagine EFI, monitoring intake air temp, coolant temp, intake vacuum and RPM, and having constant timing adjustment based on those parameters! At timing values you plug into a table...

Ign timing advance is also the fastest way for an ECU to 'catch' an engine whose idle RPM is dropping for some reason (AC kicked on, or some other issue) because it can increase engine torque on the next cyl firing event. Adding additional idle air to correct idle speed takes a little longer to have that effect.

Other thoughts:
  1. Please let us know how that Robb canister works in tight turns, if it prevents fuel starvation to the EFI, and if there are any quality issues. It's $100 cheaper than the surge tank that FITech is selling, so Robb is on my radar if I ever get around to EFI.
  2. Please move that canister closer to the radiator, it's a little vulnerable if you get in a fender-bender.
  3. Swap out that plastic fuel filter for a standard metal type. That plastic filter, and the glass-tube style that Mr Gasket et al sell, should not be on any of our cars.
  4. I see you have 'the shiny spot' on your water pump pulley. Your PS belt has caused that, ping back if you need more explanation...
