General A727 Potential R&R questions/suggestions.

Yes Sir, actually with the 2.76 gears is not bad for mileage, I think the max I got was 19/21 MPG.
But then again I'll have to re-evaluate the cam/gear/OD choices, if I intend on doing it seriously. It was more of a "that would be nice to have" spur of moment.

Engine rebuild will be at a later date, honestly I promised myself that I wouldn't rebuild the trans/engine unless it started having issues.
But there are some glaring things that do stand out that's asking the engine to be rebuilt...

transmission seems like the first "to go out"
Just in time I reckon, the transmission's getting it's rebuild for the 64th anniversary with 2024 coming around.
I can attest as well I got a Staggering 24mpg on a new stock style carb, on a 318, on my way to pick up the worst fuel economic solution for power a 4 brrl intake. Also had the 2.73 gears always loved cruising at 70 and blowing the doors off anything when I stepped into the kickdown.

That 3-2 kickdown sound is to die for.

Old Mopar 2nd gear ratio allowed plenty torque to reach the rear end, even a fairly tight one like a 2:76. I've found the 2nd gear in my A-833 w the overdrive in my D150 also makes for good acceleration, even w the /6. I think 2nd is rated around 2.45/1 in the 727.

Multiply that by the rear end ratio to see what the total ratio is in each gear. When you do this with 2.45, 2.76, 2.94, 3.23, 3.55, 3.91 etc, you can see the improvements in the changes of rear end ratio.

Remember gears are about torque multiplication, not just cruising RPM on the freeway.

So when a thread starts out like this original poster wanting more performance from a heavy car, the rear end gear ratio is the best change. And a higher stall converter won't help, and may hinder. As he stated when he drove it.
