Guilty Pleasures

i put on the movies/media that

(1) I like but nobody else does (e.g. the "Phantom Menace") it seems, and
(2) everybody thinks are bad, and I think that too (e.g., "SHowgirls"), but are SO BAD I just can't look away.

My friends and family get on my case mercilessly (in fun of course) in both instances -- hence my "guilty pleasure" :)

Most people don't like classic movies (some members here excepted). So liking them could be seen as fitting the category by the population at large. Men In White is a melodrama for example

I like some musicals too such as singing in the rain, meet me in st louis, little shop around the corner, good old summertime ... they definitely fit the category.

Probably the one I watched last night also - romantic comedy

Can*t see any guilty pleasures up till now.
Now who's the guy around here who likes to wear high heels and Nylons from time to time ?
:D

Ok, the beer comment got me to thinking. I'm somewhat of a beer snob too - my Sister is a wine snob! My wife can't stand beer but my kids and I do, although they like Ales while I like Porters and Stouts.

With the metal board and glass marbles (stored inside the board) .. gotta have that 'tick, tick, tick" when I jump (we still have ours from early 1960's -- thats not it below tho -- and still play it to jeers from younger family members). :)

I used to play with my grandma all the time. She always beat me and would never let me win. I never got discouraged. When I actually did finally beat her, I knew I had truly beat her. By the end we were pretty evenly matched.

small world. my "Nana" taught me (at age five - after half-day kindergarten) hence the set we STILL have was her "Santa" gift later that year.

I couldn't beat her (legitimately I thought but she mighta been carryin' me a little to boost my confidence) until I was about eight. :)

she was teachin' me chess when she passed away -- which i turned out to be pretty good at by end of elementary school.

i also watch tv more than i should, but would watch more if i could. as a child the family had a set similar to this.

seems like it was broken more than it worked. the repairman wore a path to the house.
i remember him letting me look over his shoulder at the amazing buzzing capacitors and glowing tubes.

i started to collect older sets at one time. i studied old repair books etc. once i got to a couple of consoles, my wife put an end to that. oh well, maybe someday.

Dusk. Weird, but I think my cars "feel" their best to me then -- parking lights on, headlights off. Lotta times I wait to go cruising/spectating, just to hit that 60 minute window while colors are still vivid :)

Old movies...sentimental dramas like A Tree Grows In Brooklyn, noir films, especially where character actors are leads or where the actors play against type (Scarlet Street has Joan Bennett as a lazy ***** and E.G. Robinson, lonesome and vulnerable.) Anything with Lizabeth Scott, Barbara Stanwyck, Dan Duryea, Dana Andrews. I really enjoy the "B-movies," because everyone had to try harder due to budget and rapid shooting schedule, often the directors were hoping to get noticed and put on better pictures. It's a big guilty pleasure to see New York as it was in the '30's and '40's.

If you haven't seen Fawlty Towers you should check it out. She co-wrote the series (and was in it) with John Cleese and was married to him
