H5001/H5006 Headlight Upgrades/Conversions

I just got some LED Headlights and they will be sent back to where they came from. There is just no way that they fit into the original headlight adjuster bucket and there are apperantly no 5.75" aftermarket mounting brackets for it available. They are just too bulky in the back to make them fit. Sucks i had high hopes in those.

Octane Lighting sells decent stuff. I might use them when this issue makes it to the top of my priority stack.

Its still reflector and lens adapters for modern form factor LED lamps OR, stuff from Cree or more anonymous asiatic fabricators in the 5.75" N006 or N001 form. I've washed my mind of any plans to install LED headlamps after seeing how manufacturers have pandered to piggery, making DANGEROUSLY OVERBRIGHT lamps exceeding the dangerously high current Federal limit of 2513 lumens per lamp. 800 lumens is MORE than adequate for lighting the roadway before one at night. HELL! We used to cringe and put on sunglasses when HALOGEN lamps first spread around in the late 1970s. I admit not all eyes are so photosensitive as mine, even 40 years later, but this whole ugly business of weaponizing automotive headlamps illustrates the terminal psychopathology of latter day consumerist capitalism brilliantly.

I use NOS 400x bulbs I scored several years ago for the C body rides, and will stick with conservative lamps for the recently acquired 1983 D150 Dodge Ram Miser. While I LOVE LED lamps for reducing the current load on the aging wiring and charging system, AND the superior light, I refuse to be party to blinding people on the road at night with headlamps. If I must resort to light weapons, there are cheap lasers available....

Yikes, I'm now hesitant to reply but I have the Autopal H5006 and 5001 that I got from Carlisle awhile ago. These are from India. I just added these LEDs - H4 and H1. They are smaller than others and fit fine although you will need to make a hole in the rubber cup. They need that to dissipate the heat and are able to withstand wetness. We will see. I haven't used them because of the winter thing but soon. If they are too bright I will replace them.

Are the Autopal plug and play, or did you have to get different connectors?

They came with H4 halogens (H1 for high), all glass, and are plug and play. After reading I figured they were better than the cheaper chinese ones but less expensive than the german ones. It was a few years ago so I'm sure they are other options now. The only issue I had was there are 3 little standoffs that are a part of the bulb rim. I had to remove 1 to allow flush fit. I know, it sounds strange. Maybe I got a mistake bulb. They work fine. But note the face pattern is not the same as OEM in case that bothers you.

You're probably legal, though I've seen a number of 3000 lumen rigs. I've seen ONE source of small H10 I think LED bulbs meant for off road, which, if they can be adapted to 5.75 reflectors and lens would actually meet my requirement for lower current for the SAME luminosity. The Feddy supposedly is itching to regulate this aspect of vehicle safety again, for the 1st time since the early 1980s, so you might want to get your stuff installed soon, and then grandfather it if they get picky. Young bureaucrats sometimes need to make their marks.....

The first "mod" we did on our 78 Newport was ditching the dreadful DOT sealed beams. We do drive at night quite often and are spoiled with modern technology (all our dailies are OEM bi-xenons).
At the same time we did not want the out of time HID tech to ruin the authentic look.
So Hella to the rescue. These are Euro-style lighting pattern which is entirely different from the DOT ones. And works off H4 bulbs. All plug and play, lighting quality is very decent, no worse than a brand new car of today with basic halogen lighting. Or better, actually.
They are glass, not plastic, and very decent quality.
