Is a 70 service manual basically the same as a 69 service manual? Also looking for a good RH mirror and crate engine builder...

Hi - I am fortunate enough to have a copy of 1970 chrysler service manual, although I drive a 1969 newport convertible.

Is there likely to be any real difference between a 1969 newport convertible and a 1970 newport convertible? I would have thought there would have been very few changes as they are practically the same vehicle... I'm also after:

(i) a RH mirror, and
(ii) a reputable crate engine builder.

My 383 2 bbl goes just fine, with some leaks from the freeze plugs evident on the block. It doesn't leak much oil, even during 500 mile trips at 80 to 90 mph, sometimes 100 when overtaking road trains....I top up about 12 ounces every 500 miles. It doesn't leak any water either.

However, I have dreams of putting in a 440 when the the Inland Revenue Service finally stops hassling me... Your recommendation of a good create engine provider would be appreciated for future reference...

While you are right that differences between a 1969 and 1970 Chrysler are minimal and mainly pertain to exteror details, trim and upholstery, there were nevertheless some changes made to the inner works, too, especially concerning fuel and emissions-related parts.

Since you are from Australia, on which continent are you looking for an engine builder?

Thanks for your prompt reply.... Looking for an engine builder in the US... Even with freight, it will be a lot cheaper and likely more reliable than local Australian builders... With respect, local Australian builders will have less experience with big block chrysler engines - the largest engines that were put in local chryslers were small block North American 318s, 340s or 360s, and even they were quite rare.

...the main consideration for me is a builder who is reliable and has a good reputation for helping out you guys in the US...

Which State are you in? Plenty of local cars running 440s, a few with Hemi engines as well, both second generation and modern versions. Bergamin Brothers in SA are well known for their big power engine builds. Another option is Eagle Auto Parts in Melbourne: ChryslerMoparEngines.

I concur that '69 and '70 C-body cars can use the same factory service manual, for many things. As mentioned, the emissions items were calibrated a bit different between those two years, as was the pcv system in some cases. BUT, if one knows what they are looking at, these things can be worked-around, by observation.

Now, IF there might be any concerns, head over to www.mymopar.com and download a factory service manual at no cost. If you might not find "a Chrysler manual", then look at the same model year of C-body Dodge for a manual. Things like swapping radios and such would be different, but the mechanicals and electronics would be the same. NOTING that 1969 C-body cars had the ignition on the lh end of the instrument panel rather than the right hand side, as 1970s had the key cylinder in the steering column, as later models did. To me, "nuances" rather than major things.

Enjoy!

69 and 70 have different ignitition switches and steering columns.
Thus the electrical will be different as well.
70 also has an electronic voltage regulator..69 was electro- mechanical.
As John says enough differences that warrant a proper shop manual.

There are differences in the steering column, ignition location and function, side marker lights instead of reflectors, and other minor areas. I would try to find the correct one, but that's me.
