Power steering pump seal????

1966 Fury, 318 Poly. Pump had a small but constant leak, got what I thought was correct seal kit (pic A), looked like all I needed was shaft seal, and the one with the kit was wrong size (ID too big). Got the # off original, 8773S, call LPS, that one was about 1/2" too big OD even though the part# was the same . Guy at LPS got book out and bought the one in pic B, closest thing they had, thought putting it on it was a tad big, it was, leaked bad. Guess I'm looking for the part # for either just the shaft seal or correct seal kit for pictures pump. Man this sux....

That looks like the small TRW pump, the saginaw pump had a oval filler, and the Thompson Federal 1.06 is the larger pump. My kit for the 1.06 should arrive tomorrow, since I was doing it I'm replacing the O ring seals for the reservoir and painting the unit as it wasn't sure it was the shaft seal after all.

Looks a lot like a federal pump to me. I'm not sure if the casting number on the front will help identify it or not. I have a federal pump on my car and the casting number is 237955 . I hope it can be of some use to you.

This is really no big deal and all you need is the shaft size and the seat size. You do have verniers don't you? Go to any bearing or pump repair place and give the dimensions and it's purpose and they can fix you up. I recommend a double-lip seal so you'll never have to change it again. If you have the old seal take it with you for sizing, if not measure the depth of the seal well so you don't get one too wide.

Looking at your pump it looks similar to mine which is sitting on my kitchen table, (a advantage having a girlfriend that doesn't come over very often) with 8 years separating build, the design could be different. I called Edelmann Plews and they found in their catalog the stock number for the Thompson Federal 1.06 was wrong and were correcting it. I got mine thru NAPA and the price was reasonable, if it's wrong then they reorder for the right one.

P.S. I would remove the pump and replace the O rings, degrease, and repaint, save time later down the road. Very easy to do.
