I am pretty sure the original tires should have been in the 27 1/2 - 28" range.
I just measured the spare that was in the trunk, it looks like it is probably close to what came on the car from the factory.... It was a 8.25 x 14 bias ply that measured 26in diam.

One would need to see the fender tag or broadcast sheet to know what came on the car.
I'm pretty sure the 68 could have had 14" wheels.
