Sweden 2017

the minimum holiday by law in germany is 20 workdays (in a 5day week, 24 days in a 6day week). So everyone has at least 4 weeks holiday. This is valid for temporary workers, too. If they stay for 6 months they will have at least two weeks of holiday within that time.

In most better paid jobs you have 30 work days holiday (6 weeks off).

Of course companies in germany cut down employees as much as they could, too. But they simple have to calculate that everyone will be gone for a certain time in the year.

Bigger companies (with more than 10 employees) can not simply fire older employees and replace them by younger&cheaper guys. The law forbids it.

I am assuming that the benefits you are describing is for the professional/managerial sector. What is it like for the peons working in retail or hourly non-union jobs?

as Fred (Fratzog) wrote:
This is the german law.
EVERY employee in germany gets it

They definitely don't get it over here...

Boy, you got that right.............................. Too many here really don't "get it". The smartest people in this country (just ask them) just keep putting swamp members in government and then expect something to change............... OK

I know that I, as one of the dumb Americans feel lucky that from time to time we get to bid on a large job as a supplier and find out that we are competing with a European manufacturer. They are always slow and never can meet the the specs in an actual test.

Besides the freedom? They're expensive. Forget about the fact that our society is steadily going down the tubes.
This is coming from someone that never felt that urge to have children.
That all kinda ties together
I'm closer to Matt's POV on this, but I appreciate/respect the other side too... I would have to say that a big factor in all of this also has to do with having the correct partnership at the correct timing.

Viv and I found each other at the end of our 30's and we're happy to be without. I might have been convinced had she felt differently, but I also didn't want to start at that point in life. One the other hand, there were many before her that I am purely thankful I was not tied to with an "18 year contract".

Sorry Dave, we didn't all find "the one" early in life... I'm figuring you made up for me... :thankyou:

Thank you, John.

I don't suppose I have to mention how much easier it is to be the "indulgent adult" than to do the full time parent thing. It is pretty easy to get along with a couple of great kids for a few minutes...

Interesting conversation. We too have a vacation based on the law. You get a right to 2 days of vacation for each month you work, and after a year in the same workplace you earn 2.5 days each month. The law also describes the timeframe you have to keep your earned vacation. The employer has a right to tell when you can have your vacation, but it still has to go within the timeframe prescribed in the law.

All this makes the system very well preconceivable for both parties. You get a chance to plan your vacation, and the employer knows he has to make do meanwhile.
We Finns tend to think it's to a mutual benefit. We like to work towards common goals.
In the long run we can achieve much more when we keep together, than we would achieve as individuals. It's very much the same idea they teach you in the Marines.
