I understand that the Auto Temp II system all together is much more complex then the manual system but has anyone tried simply swapping out the auto temp controls for the manual one? I am working on a 1972 Chrysler New Yorker. Will the manual controls still operate the compressor or any of the basic functions such as the temperature blend door(s)? The reason I ask is I have a faulty auto temp controller but a good used manual controller. The vacuum hose connection and electrical plugs look very similar and could work (with the modification of the 2 wire connector). Any thoughts?

The ONLY way I would consider the change would be with the donor vehicle sitting beside your existing vehicle in a secure workshop environment. The basic doors and such might be the same, but that might be most of what's common between the two systems. More than just a few cable changes and vacuum line changes, I suspect. Not to mention what's in the instrument panel itself (thermostat and such). On the ATII system, for some reason, there's also a screen on the intake side of the a/c compressor with a blade terminal that seems to be some sort of ground. Best to fix what you've got and make it work as well as Chrysler designed it to. The under hood control was also used on Mercedes cars, so that's still around via those import sources.

BE SURE to check the passenger front floor for residual moisture issues due to a/c case leaks at the bottom gasketed area between the two case halves.
