The Sheriff

Well folks I give, this is as close as I can get this portion of the quarter panel. I' out at the deepest 1/8" I can;t do much more without affecting the upper body line. More over the slab portion is exactly where it needs to be so I guess when I finish the rest of the weld, we'l see what it looks like with mud on it.

welp, the door jamb down through the wheel arch are spot (rosette) welded.. I was going to move on to the bottom of the quarter panel behind the wheel arch but when I clamp it up I get a loose spot right above the wheel arch. Not quite an oil can but still loose. so I have to figure out where it needs to be shrunk on the lower portion before I weld it up. I may just finish by winter. No pics since there's not much to post about spot welds, I'm sure you've all seen them before.

So the son of a ***** caught fire yesterday. Twice. The people that performed the previous repair went wild with the tar on the inside of this trunk. I cleaned the area to be welded good, or so I thought. I was finishing the last 8 inches of the butt weld and spent too much time in one spot I guess. Next thing I know "what's that light coming from the trunk, and why is there black smoke?" I'm thinking quietly to myself. Great use the extinguisher of try to snuff it with my hand? Had enough projects for the day so, gloved hand up beside the tail light bucket towards the holes for the QP extension and wipe it out. "It hot." "No ****, it was on fire, dummy." Sigh.

More weld grinding to do on my lunch hour today...

I see a light at the end of the tunnel, I hope it's not a train.

Glad to hear you got it out quick enough!

I was a bit worried when doing my wheel wells. The bits of seam sealer, and undercoating left would start smoking pretty good. See smoke coming from the trunk a couple times.. but no fire luckily.

Tar about 4 inches above where I was working. You know I clean back a solid inch from where the weld was to be. My HAZ should even been that big. I didn't think they sprayed the crap that far up. I should have known based on how thick it was pumped into areas they couldn't see. A solid 1/2" was on the panel itself, above the wheel well there was almost 2 inches. They just let it fly. I'll see if I can find a pic of how thick this crap was.

OH on a good note I did find replacement bulbs for the 1034's that were still installed in the lights. I WAS going to go LED. I still might if I find a LED bulb that distribute the light nicely. But I decided on the 3496's. Very bright. Even in the sun they light up like modern cars. I'll be happy to know people will see it when I go for the end of summer drive.. Actually they serve a practical purpose now, I use the reflected light on the garage wall to determine how close the rear is to it. So brighter is better for me.

I need waaaaaaaaaaay brighter backup light.
May suck up a lot of amps for a few seconds but I need it.

No backup lights since the bumper is off.

If it was mine, I'd go LED there for sure. You can get brighter more directional light with those.

So you're saying for 18 bucks that's what I want for my B/U lamps?
It will brighten up my 8'0" wide door when I back in my 7'10" wide car in the black darkness of night?

I feel that the original intent of backup lights were more to let others know you were backing up.
Even with glass lenses the ones on my 67 Barracuda are useless.
