Yes ..... It is, (was), called for .... That is a full scale clay model in a Chrysler design studo likely sometime in the mid 50's, (Advance product design).

These were an exersize to allow the designers to put their wildest imaginations into full scale demension, and this was the dawning of the fin era. The public liked them.

Usually the advance models would differ from side to side to allow for faster design development, and the clay allowed for easy styling changes.

So yes ..... It is called for. I wish stylists still used this method instead of the "CAD" programs used to design cars now.

OH ..... Gary, I'm glad you were never a Chrysler stylist.
"Stylists".....are not designers. THAT'S the difference. Only a stylist would dream of such monstrosity.

Larry grew up in Southern California and was involved in the early days of the desert hot rod time trial racing.

He studied design and went to work in the GM design studios in the late 50's. He was largely responsible for the Corvette split window design and later, while working at FoMoCo designed most of the graphics for the Mustangs & Torinos including the Boss 302 and 429, Mach I and cobra jet Mustangs.

I got to know him in the early 90's. He had his own grafic/design consulting business and I worked with him on a few projects.
We even attended a couple of SCCA meets, Mid Ohio and Charlotte together. Above all else Larry was a car guy ..... couldn't get enough.

He became ill and passed away sometime in the later 90's.
Shenoda was probably the last of the car stylists.

A guy I work with drives a Subaru Baja. I want to jab my own eyes out every time I walk by it.

The early 2000s Chevy Avalanche, the Subaru Baja, and the Honda Ridgeline all suffer from the same general malady - too much of that stupid plastic cladding - as did the Pontiac Aztec. None are really trucks, and they are not cars, either. All try to be something, but can't pull off the look. The Aztec dash is really very, very nice and laid out with a real plan in mind. You look at its assembly-line twin, the Buick Rendevous, and you'd never know they shared over 80% of content. The Buick received very good reviews and sold well.

I towed an 18' car hauler with a '76 Chevy van on it with my niece's '06 Av, and it was hell! It was impossible to find the right balance with that van on the trailer. One lousy inch one way or another, and it was either too nose-heavy for the Av, or too tail-skittish! I told my wife (who wants one real bad!) that if she wants one, she'll have to find someone to trade her PT ragtop with for one, 'cuz I sure as hell won't buy one!

More ugly - '60-'61 Valiant. '58 Olds. '57 Hudson Hornet/Nash Ambassador. '46 Studebaker. '58 Studebaker/Packard Hawk. '75 AMC Matador sedan. 1979-84 GM X-cars (Citation, Phoenix, etc). Dodge Dynasty. Any 1996 - 2005 BMW. Any Ford, GM, or Dodge pickup from 2009-present. 2014 Jeep Grand Cherokee.

There are hundreds more. That's just the American cars I've listed.

I had a friend who sold cars for a living. He worked at the Subaru dealer for several years, and there is a certain demographic that is drawn to them, especially the Forester wagon. He ahd his co-workers refer to the cars as "Les-barus"...you can figure the reason, I'm sure.

I for some reason have several lesbian paint customers. I'm pretty laid back non judgmental guy, but nearly one out of every couple has a Subaru. My observation backs up your friend, who was a Subaru salesman.

For anyone who is interested, 1 Columbia doctor was hot out of maybe 30 customers. The funny thing, when I was painting for her I thought, she could do a lot better.

That is hilarious I think some of my customers might find it funny too, but I'm not brave enough to find out.
