Vintage NASCAR

Darlington 1973

Richard Petty needed a relief driver. Here crew chief Dale Inman helps rookie driver Lennie Pond into the car. Story go's that Lennie made up a lap, but Inman made him get out of the car because he was too short. Richard at 6'2" & Lennie at 5'7" not sure if Richard got back in or if they found someone taller to take the wheel. It's hard to jump in someone's car especially if you are not the same size. As for Lennie. He & Richard would become very good friends. Lennie had 1 career win at Talledega. He was yet another great driver that never got a ride in a top car. Yet had a string of top 10 finishes. I hear he is still involved in NASCAR working for one of the teams

1976 Daytona 500

Anybody remember this. I was watching it live. Despite the high stakes & that this happened comming to the checker. These two long time rivals went on the rest of their careers without feuding. I don't remember them ever wrecking with each other after this.

Hearing Lennie Pond has been diagnosed with Lung Cancer. UPDATE: hearing he is home now recovering from surgury

I was watching live as well. Two masters of getting in some one else's heads doing it at the same time. I was a kid and couldnt decide who my favorite was. My Dad said pick who you want, but I take teh guy in the chrysler product everytime.
Thanks for bringing back memories, Bob

You're welcome. I was NOT a Pearson fan. I was a kid myself then. Richard Petty was the man to me. I was one mad 14 y/o I have gotten over it. Kinda like Pearson now

A day at the mall

This was a common site around these parts at least back in the 70's. A Petty car displayed at a strip mall. This was in Colonial Heights, VA.

The Forward look

Petty battling some GM cars in his Fury. I imagine this was a 413 powered car

Marty Robbins

The Country Music legend spent quite a bit of time behind the wheel of a Dodge car in NASCAR. Marty had a string of hit songs throught the 60's early 70's. I always like " the town of El Paso" Old style country at its best if you ask me
