My '71 Challenger is coded E65 which is in the book as HP 300 horse which appears to be the only 383 4bbl available that year. It's an ac car so what color was the engine originally?

Orange. Good thing it's not a 340 as then I'd have to ask what the assembly date was. ;). There was a mid year color change to the 340's.

I figured it'd be orange, especially since I think I pulled the short lock out of the car for the first time since it left the Hamtramk line and there was no sign of blue.

My 1973 Ralleye 340 Challenger engine was blue......bought that one new in 1973.
Wish I still had that car too!

Question for you Doug, I know you know Hamtramck but when did the engines get painted when they left Trenton (BB) or at the assembly plant.

Barry Washington is the one that really know the Hamtramck plant. He's the one that runs the registry and website.

I honestly don't know. I presume the distributors and other accessories attached to the engines would have been installed at the engine plant so they would have had to have been painted at the engine assembly plant.

This is a fun and information thread. Thanks to everyone for contributing so much information. It seems that depending on the situation (body style, year, etc.) you could get a corporate blue 383-4 barrel A/C motor wearing a Carter carb, "HP" exhaust manifolds, dual snorkel air cleaner pumping fumes into a dual exhaust system on a '70 Chrysler.

I'll continue this with a few more questions:

1) Did the dual snorkel air cleaner on a '70, N code 383-4 barrel engine wear a pie tin? If so what did it say on it?
2) Did the N code, 383-4 barrel engine in a '70 Chrysler use premium fuel unlike the 290 hp 2-barrel engine. Most of what I have seen, coinciding with Commando1's info, is that the 2 and four barrel engines used the same camshaft between the 330 and 290 hp engines.

Again, cool thread!

No pie tin... they do look nice however and is a nice addition to the engine bay regardless

Good question on the manufacturer specs on the fuel. Since the fuels are different today and have been for over thirty years I never quite paid attention to it. These days I simply run premium fuel on the old cars anyway.

Who said the same cam was used in in the 330 and the 290 horse engines?

I said mine (330 horse) had same cam as magnum 335 horse.

I could believe that they all used the same cam, the 2 bbl having less compression and carburetion put it at 290-300. The 4 bbl and a shade over 9.33:1 gets you to 330 and the 335 horse engine gets a couple extra degrees of timing and red/orange paint.

Ok so no one said it. That's good because it's nonsense.

Go to your room Dave.

I would bet that by 70-71 the only cam development was for the upcoming emissions tightening. Not to mention that was the end of the time when they did not have to verify horsepower they just picked it out of the rev range somewhere.

Premium fuel was recommended for 4bbls.
Cam 2532190 was used for 383-2, 383-4 LP and 440-4 LP
Cam 2843564 was for 383-4 HP and 440-4 HP
