1970 Plymouth Sport Fury V10 Swap Build Thread

Mopar Action ran a story on handling improvement for a 1975 New Yorker. 1.18 was part of a big improvement. Considering for my 1971 Fury 440/727. Thanks!

Well I have been putting off doing anything with the fury for way too long. My plan was to get all the body work done and have it done before I started driving it but I haven’t been able to get to doing it so I decided to put the interior back in, start driving it and having some fun with it. I’m going to work out all the mechanical bugs this summer then this winter do the body paint and top.

So I started getting the interior in today and hope to have that done tomorrow.

So I got the rear side panels and back seat in. The buckets should be in tomorrow. The panels must have been from a non rear seatbelt car because they were not notched for the seat belt mount so I had to cut them a bit. Then after I got them installed the passenger side window didn’t work so I had to pull it back off and get the window working. All in all a 45 minute job turned into 4 hours.

Well today didn't go as planned, I wanted to get the buckets in and the seat belts. I did get the pass side bucket in and seat belts. The heat and humidity in Michigan today was horrible. So after taking a brake for lunch and drinking a gallon of water I thought I could get the driver side in no problem but when I went to install the power seat would not work so I spent the next 5 hours taking the assembly apart cleaning and back together. It is working now. So plan on putting it in first thing tomorrow.

Finally the seats are in. I’m really happy with it. I have one seat back to repair and a good used one in the works from a member hear.

Took it out for its longest test drive tonight. About 15 miles. The water temperature never got over 200 but the oil pressure is still dropping down to about 5 psi when warm and idling for a few minutes. I think I could have a leak in my pickup tube that I had to make for the center sump pan. As soon as I give it just a little throttle it jumps up to 30+ and if I rev it up it goes up to over 50. The pressure is steady driving down the road at 55 it is around 30 and the engine is only turning about 1800. Gotta love the overdrive. I think I will try it on the freeway tomorrow and see how it does. With the weight of the v10 I really need heavier torsion bars so my next big purchase will be from firm feel for a set of 1.18’s .

Very nice progress! In ten weeks, she'll be ready for the 2024 CATL Drive.

I don’t know if it was worth 5 hours of sanding, buffing and waxing but I do know I don’t feel like I need a tetanus shot after running my hand down the side. Check out the before and after pics below. Lol

So the rust on the roof was really bugging me because a few spots were close to rusting through and one spot was. I also hated the look of the roof seams. So I sanded the roof down and started filling the roof seams. I first used fiberglass and if it needs it I will skim coat with some mud. I’m going to prime and paint it for now and it will eventually get a white vinyl top after the bodywork and paint is done.

Got some more work done on the top. I tell you I will never again complain that my wife buys to much wrapping paper at Christmas. Lol

A little bit of sanding tomorrow and I should be able to paint the top white.
