Last season on "The golden shitbox".......

In keeping with the firewall and engine component rebuilds, it was time to rebuild my first heater box...

Before
FB_IMG_1584236817920.jpg
FB_IMG_1584236820795.jpg

I tore it apart and scrubbed it inside and out to get rid of the nastyness and mouse smell
FB_IMG_1584236828447.jpg
FB_IMG_1584236831171.jpg

I then took all the metal parts down to bare metal, primed them and gave them a coat of paint to protect them for the next 47 years..
FB_IMG_1584236856878.jpg
FB_IMG_1584236931270.jpg

I quickly realized that my original cover was rotted out... My DMT kit did not come with the instructions it says it includes.... So I climbed in the attic and dug out the heater box I kept from my 79k mile Rotten 69 Fury I, which has continuelly provided to be excellent reference....
FB_IMG_1584236885144.jpg
FB_IMG_1584236910916.jpg
FB_IMG_1584236914275.jpg
FB_IMG_1584236917903.jpg

As I mentioned reference is key when blindly doing anything...
FB_IMG_1584236899625.jpg
FB_IMG_1584236902589.jpg

One of the reoccurring issues with this csr stemmed from someone using hard water in the cooling system, leading to the entire cooling system being filled with rust and scale, despite my best efforts, the heater core was toast, so I went back into the attic... And out came a good used one I had.
FB_IMG_1584236894388.jpg
FB_IMG_1584236892131.jpg

I started the reconditioning process from there... Reproducing what I was missing for gaskets as I went...
FB_IMG_1584236934910.jpg
FB_IMG_1584236942361.jpg

Reassembly then began...
FB_IMG_1584236928756.jpg
FB_IMG_1584236926330.jpg

I reproduced other gaskets while I waited for the contact cement to dry.... FYI, contact cement will get you all kinds of stoned if you are not properly ventilated.... Again FYI... I should have known better as I use to brush it on out of a gallon can to glue down horse mat.....
FB_IMG_1584236873854.jpg
FB_IMG_1584236876730.jpg

Our finished product which I've function checked everything on...
FB_IMG_1584236945153.jpg
FB_IMG_1584236966870.jpg
FB_IMG_1584236969727.jpg
FB_IMG_1584236973068.jpg
FB_IMG_1584236979340.jpg

Okay you're wondering what the hell is up with the numbers? I just couldn't help myself when the 79k mile one owner heater box had it, after all I stole this cover piece, so I kind of had to put it back on..
FB_IMG_1584236921275.jpg

My booster was next, however we will be revisiting it in a later episode....
FB_IMG_1584236880722.jpg

Again, bare we go...
FB_IMG_1584236990679.jpg
FB_IMG_1584236993538.jpg

Then too primer...
FB_IMG_1584236996417.jpg
FB_IMG_1584236999075.jpg
FB_IMG_1584237001835.jpg

Paint, although, I'm unhappy with the visible pitting, so I'm going to go back and skim it with dolphin glaze and block it out, then prime and reshoot....
FB_IMG_1584237006774.jpg
FB_IMG_1584237009334.jpg

With everything starting to thaw, I started digging in totes that have been in the shed since 2017....I was so dissatisfied with the quality of the chrome I had collected that I actually cracked open my parts book, found my part numbers and began scowering the interwebs in search of NOS replacements, I was able to find all of the hood/upper grille molding trim NOS, so I won't need any of these pitted ones..... Headlight rings I will polish...

FB_IMG_1584237016054.jpg
FB_IMG_1584237020741.jpg

On the subject of polishing, I decided to teach myself to polish stainless trim.... I bought a proper variable speed bench top buffer, compounds and wheels....
FB_IMG_1584237029736.jpg
FB_IMG_1584237032230.jpg
FB_IMG_1584237034908.jpg
FB_IMG_1584237038133.jpg
FB_IMG_1584237041243.jpg
FB_IMG_1584237044119.jpg

I cut the firewall out of my most recent parts car and brought it home...
FB_IMG_1584236982597.jpg
FB_IMG_1584236985809.jpg

It was time to prepare the stub.... I had a few loose ends to finish, I was unhappy with the rotors, so I pulled them off, masked them, scuffed them, primed them, and sprayed them so they will look good for a fair while, long enough anyway... I also had a sway bar that needed mounting, you'll note this is the biggie, the 15/16 bar... Sweet....
FB_IMG_1584236838787.jpg
FB_IMG_1584237071752.jpg
FB_IMG_1584237075232.jpg
FB_IMG_1584237078404.jpg
FB_IMG_1584237087452.jpg

I also screwed around with the brakes, I found high metallic USA made police car brake pads from E booger, so I ordered a set and put them on, I also replaced the lower ball joint bolts.... More on that later...
FB_IMG_1584237081366.jpg
FB_IMG_1584237084459.jpg

I mentioned the ball joint bolts.... I love using original fasteners, but not at the compromise of safety...
FB_IMG_1584237064155.jpg

I finished up the ISO plates and hoses them down.....
FB_IMG_1584237052084.jpg

Here's a neat find, I took a chance.... And didn't **** my pants.... This time...

Energy suspension makes a set of polyurethane ISO bushings marketed for the 73/74 B/E crowd, quick reference of my parts book showed that 73 B body and C body ISO rubbers were the same P/N.... So I took the $100 chance... Sure enough, perfect, firmer ride, deteriorated rubber replaced and no loss of ride quality by doing the complete delete...
FB_IMG_1584237047097.jpg
FB_IMG_1584237049595.jpg
FB_IMG_1584237057039.jpg
FB_IMG_1584237054627.jpg

Time to plumb it up.... I take great pleasure in running lines, my customers always comment about how OE they look.... My own stuff is no exception.... I love the NiCAD line also, it's expensive, but IMHO worth it....
FB_IMG_1584237125500.jpg
FB_IMG_1584237137950.jpg
FB_IMG_1584237143003.jpg
FB_IMG_1584237147977.jpg
FB_IMG_1584237151632.jpg
FB_IMG_1584237154660.jpg

I'd also like to note that the prop valve is now in its correct location, not bolted to the damn inner fender.....

Rubbers, can't forget the rubbers...
FB_IMG_1584237067795.jpg
FB_IMG_1584237114394.jpg
FB_IMG_1584237117343.jpg

Next it was time to see if I actually know anything... The verdict is maybe..
FB_IMG_1584237090527.jpg
FB_IMG_1584237093404.jpg
FB_IMG_1584237110403.jpg

Moving on....

I opted to replace the mystery waterpump I had with a new HD unit.... Again, everything else in the cooling system is new... Now's not the time to penny pinch... It appears to be a direct repro of the HD one on my 79 E58 360 Pursuit motor that's in my storage building...
FB_IMG_1584237161176.jpg
FB_IMG_1584237164189.jpg
FB_IMG_1584237167795.jpg

I wasn't happy with the paint, so out came the 40+ year old can of Mopar paint... I scuffed and the wiped the motor down with solvent.... More on that in a minute...

Back to our regularly scheduled restoration....
FB_IMG_1584237178786.jpg

I popped on my paint plugs.... These are from the 79 360 that was in my convertible when I bought it in 2012...ive used them to paint 5 LA small blocks since....
FB_IMG_1584237171721.jpg

Time for some colour folks...
FB_IMG_1584237185089.jpg

Now we wait for it to cure....

FB_IMG_1584237193235.jpg
FB_IMG_1584237197163.jpg

About 8 hours later I checked it before heading to work.... That'll do!

FB_IMG_1584237245046.jpg

Yes I'm using a 14x5.5 Swinger wheel as a stand.... I'm sick like that...

Time to start putting on the dressings.... NOS distributor I had, Mopar cap, put on the valve cover grommets, breather, PCV, wire holders, fuel pump, bypass hose, oil sender, and plugs.
FB_IMG_1584237249852.jpg
FB_IMG_1584237252396.jpg
FB_IMG_1584237255787.jpg
FB_IMG_1584237258249.jpg
FB_IMG_1584237260808.jpg

Before anyone busts my balls, I don't like the following painted engine colour and don't care it's not factory correct;
Bypass hose, wire holders, fuel pump....

Nick
